MILKING SHORTHORNS
WAIKATO ACTIVITIES. BRANCH’B ANNUAL MEETING. APPOINTMENT OF JUDGES. With a large attendance of breeders present, the annual meeting of the Waikato branoh of the New Zealand Milking Shorthorn Association was held at the farm of Mr G. D. Hall at Kio Kio yesterday afternoon. The president, Mc-R. D. Duxfleld, presided. Mr Duxfleld said that the year had shown a splendid advance with the Milking Shorthorn breed and there was undoubtedly a definite improvement in the inquiry for the breed, both males and females, and prices had oertainly advanoed. Perhaps the most striking example had occurred at the last Combined Breeders’ Sale at Claudelands when, on the third day, the Shorthorns met with an improved demand and prices eclipsed all other breeds. Practically a full clearance was effeoted. After referring to the healthy financial position of the branch Mr Duxfleld congratulated Messrs G. D. Hall and Sons on their success in raising the standard of the senior two-year-old class C.O.R. testing from 542-66 pounds butterfat to 580.62 pounds bu.tterfat, an increase of 37, 96 pounds, : with their heifer, Pinedale Beauty Fourth. This performance gained for her owners the special prize offered by the New Zealand Milking Shorthorn Association of £i per pound of butterfat over the previous standard. Eleotlon of Officers. The following officers were elected: President, Mr R. D. Duxfleld; honorary secretary-treasurer, Mr A. W. Green; members of the Dominion oouncil, Messrs R. D. Duxfleld, G. D. Hall, J. Searle, George Hall; delegates to Combined Breeders’ Association, Messrs A. W. Green and R. D. Duxfleld. The choice of judges for agricultural shows in the South Auckland district was discussed and recommendations for the appointment of senior and junior adjudicators were made for the Morrinsville, Waikato, Waikato Central, Te Awamutu, Ohura, and Otorohanga Associations. It was decided to add the Otorohanga and Te Awamutu Associations to the list of donations and to make a display of photographs at the Waikato Winter Show. Considerable discussion was evoked by a suggestion to appoint three judges to act at Royal Shows in the place of one. The proposal was commended and will be forwarded to the Dominion Council for favourable consideration. To encourage C.O.R. testing, Mr Ken Hall suggested that the Association should offer medals for class leaders each year. The recommendation was forwarded to the council. Following the meeting the Pinedale Herd was inspected by the members and Mr and Mrs Hall were host and hostess at afternoon tea. Three new members were eleoted.
