Born in 1861, Field-Marshal Allenby was the son of Mr Hynman Alleniby, and in 1896 he married Adelaide Mabel Chapman. He was educated at Hailey—bury and the Royal Military College, Sandhul'st.
Upton leaving school Field-Marshal Allen-by entered the Inniskilling Dragoons, and with this regiment served in the Bechuanaland Expedition in 1881—85, and in South Africa from 1899 to 1902, where he was twice mentioned in despatches. Sorvlco In Great war. Viscount Ailenby gave distinguished service in the Great War. Upon the outbreak of hostilities he was placed in command oi’ the Cavalry. From 1915 to 1917 'he commanded the Third Army. lie was promoted to Lieutenant—General and later to General and was appointed Grand Ohicer of the Legion of Honour. Viscount .Aiienby was Commander-in-Ciilei’ of the Egyptian Expeditionary Force from 1917 to 1919. throughout the Palestine Campaign, and from 1919 to 1925 was High Commissioner for Egypt. He receivedmany foreign orders including the American Distinguished Service Medal and the Croix de Guerre of Belgium and of France. The honorary degree of a Doctor of Canon Law was conferred upon him at Oxford, and the degree or a Doctor of Laws at Cambridge. Lord Milne vsaid Viscount Allenlby was a. wonderful strategist, a great leader, and a great gentleman, with a lovable character.
