CHEAPER CEMENT.
‘ RIDUO‘I’ION IN NORTH lILIND. TO TAKE EFFECT NEXT MONT} (From our Parllunenury Correspondent.) WELLINGTON. Wednesday. The urgency of improving the condition of dairy cow sheds and yards in the Dominion was emphasised by Mr C. H. Burnett (Government— Tauranga) in a question he asked the Minister of Agriculture, the Hon. \V. ‘Lee Martin, in the House or RepresenHatives to—day. He asked the Minister .whether he would arrange for farmers to obtain cement supplies at reduced rates and thus enable improvements to be carried out.
I The Minister replied: “The desira‘biiiiy of ensuring that dairy-farmer: ‘mny purchase cement at the lowest ‘possible price is appreciated, and the matter is being looked into. The 1933 Tarifl Commission, after hearing evidence from the three companies. in~ ciuding cost or production. recommended thai the tariff protection be reduced from is per hundred-weight to 8d per hundred-weight. This recommenation was subsequently adopted.
“The companies have, at the request of the Hon. Minister of Industries and Commerce, allocated territories on a basis which will cheaper: transport charges, and in consequence the price of cement in the North Island will be reduced as (rom June 1 next by is 6d per ton. The price in the Otago anc Southland districts was reduced 1): Gs 6d per ton a i'ew months ago. Tin position will be further reviewed in six months' time."
