WATER IN SOIL.

VICTORIA BTRIIT SITES. REPAIRS TO BUILDING. In a report Mr J. W. Lewis, building inspector to the Hamilton Borough ICouncil, stated at the council's meeting last evening that he was still not satisfied with the repair work being undertaken on the building in Victoria Street occupied by Messrs Hallenstein Bros. He added that the {rout of the building was still moving. In another report Mr Lewis said the plans and specifications of the alterations would be submitted to the council at that next meeting. ‘

The Inspector also reported on the falling of the parapet and the measures he had taken to ensure public safety. Mr C. Lafl’erty asked the Inspector whether there was any truth in the suggesuon that a weak line of soil ran from the hack of Garden Place to the river, on which Hallensteln 'Bros.‘ building stood.

“I do not know about a weak line of soil," replied Mr Lewis, “but-I do know that on the western side of Victoria St. contractors have always lound great difficulty in laying foundations owing to the prevalence of water at a slight depth." The reports were received.
