EIGHT-OAR ROWING.
NEW SYBTEIVI ADVOCATED. ATTEMPT TO RAISE STANDARD. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Wednesday. A suggestion to do away with interProvincial eight-oared rowing in New Zealand and substitute this by interclub championship eights was discussed at a meeting of the Wellington Rowing Association. The Wellington Rowing Club, which originated the proposal, wrote that since the introduction of inter-provin-cial rowing the standard had dropped. "The whole essence of successful rowing is the fostering of club eighths,” stated the letter. " All' other countries have championship eights for club crews and more interest is added and a higher degree of combination acquired.” The letter added that a representative crew would be the champion eight of New Zealand. On previous occasions men chosen from all over the Dominion were expected to compete against highly-trained combinations from other countries accustomed to shorter courses. Several members said they thought the move a good one and that there would be an improvement in the standard of rowing if it were adopted.
