NEW PIG FARM.

MODERN METHODS ADOPTED. CONSTRUCTION AT TE AW‘AMUTU. (Times Representative.) TE A\\’ASiUTU. Tuesday. Work is proceeding apace on the construction of the New Zealand Cooperative bairy Company's new up-to-date pig farm at ’l‘e Awamutu, and after three months‘ work the farm is taking detinite shape. When completed the farm will he the largest of its kind in New Zea—land. The area covered is 100 acres and accommodation on up—to—date lines will be provided for 3000 pigs. Already H breeding houses have been erected in ditterent parts of the farm and other buildings are well under way. A unique feature of the estab—lishment, as far as the Waikato is concerned, is the large, well—constructed ‘-'woaner sty." which will accommodate 500 weaner pigs. Instead of the weanem being kept in their old quarters after they have left the sow. as is usually the case, they will be shifted to these modern t'eedinar and sleeping quarters. constructed of wood, the building, which is nearly completed, will be provided with a concrete tloor. The top sections or the outside walls will he composed of sliding shutters, which, when opened in fine weather, will provide adequate ventilation for the animals. Una fat--tening pen is nearly finished and is designed to hold 125 pigs. it is proposed to construct another building of similar capacity for the same purpose. Many pig farms purchase store pigs from the farmers for breeding purposes, but a different policy will be practised on the Te Awamutu establishment. Two hundred breeding sows will be kept and the [arm will raise its own piss. Three—inch pipes are being laid from the New Zealand Clo—operative Dairy Company‘s factory. over a mile away, to carry buttermilk for feeding purposes. Situated in a central position are {our tanks. each of a capacity of 2500 gallons, which will receive the buttermilk direct from the factory From these tanks. which stand 33 feet high, the will will he gravitated over the “hole. of the farm.

It is hoped to have the farm com—pleted and in working order for the commencement of the new dairy season in July.
