The Minister of Finance. in a Budget speech, said the surplus of £322.000 \wuld be divided between relief in taxation. including (i t'arlhing in the pound of! the sugar tax. the abolition of the 105 cenial on wool and wool waste. the abolition of the cattle and sheep levies, (in increase in the child—ren's allowance or £SO to £6O, and a reduction of the tax on the lowerpriced cinema seals. The Government would contribute $1,750,000 to relieve unemployment by the construction of airports and harbours, public health and publlc Works. local authorities contributing £750,000. The national debt was $228,854,000 compared with £22.313,000 when Mr De Valera assumed ofiiee. The country’s finances were. sound. and spending power had increased. The income and property tax rose by £300,000.
