WOMEN’S DIVISION.

EAST WAIKATO SUB-PROVINCIAL. The third annual meeting of the East W'aikato Sub-Provincial Executive of the Women‘s Division of the Farmers‘ Union was held in the Putaruru tClub rooms on the afternoon of May {5. it was attended by delegates from 'Reporoa, Ngon-gotaha, Tirau, Matalmata, P'utaruru, Wootu and To-koroa. l'l‘he chair was taken by Mrs C. Allen. the retiring president, who, when the report had been read. discussed the balance-sheet, which showed that the sum of £8 was in hand. Officers for 1936 were :—Presidont. «Mrs vV-che (Putaruru); vice-xpresi-’dents, Mesdames Grimths (Matamata) and Martyn (Ngongotaha); secretary, tMrs H. \V. Baldwin (Putarnru). ‘ The recent press reports that the living conditions under which farm ‘ha-nds had to work were inadequate. ‘were discussed, and it was decided that a. strong protest should be made against SUCh a wrong impression. ‘Delegates stated that it was contrary ‘to fact that lam] labourers were not ‘given good conditions and surroundings under which to live. It was maintained by the members that almost all roses ot‘ hurdship as reported were without foundation. A remit embodying the views of the delegates ion the matter was carried for the Provinuiai Executive meeting. The President's Report. The retiring president. Mrs IC. Allen, tin her report, stated that the year past had been a difficult one in that the. \Nomen‘s Division of the Farmers' Union had not Ibeen able to grant all applications for housekeepers be—cause there had been a shortage of the latter. This condition seemed to be widespread, as other executives had experienced the same difficulty. Mrs Allan stated that there were still many farms where women were putting up a brave fight with little imoney and no conveniences to help ;them along, In such cases When a. goall came to the Women’s Division of the Farmers‘ Union for a. housekeeper and there was none to send it was most unfortunate, since it was for this purpose that the Division had been formed. In her two years as president Mrs ’Ai-ien said she had met some very pitirful cases and that there was no doubt t a housekeeper in such and many homes was a wonderful help. Throughout the year the 'branch re—presentation had been very good. in conclusion she thanked the secretary land advisory members for their assistonce. A very enjoyable afternoon tea was served at the end of the meeting. HUNTLV BRANCH. The annual meeting of the Huntly [branch of the Women‘s Division was ‘held in the Parish Hall on Thursday, Mrs Tait, senior, presiding over a good attendance of members. It was decided to hold future meetings on the second Thursday of each month at it am. As there was just the full quorum of nominees there was no election, and the following omcers were re—ele-ctedc; —President, Mrs Tait, senior; secre-i lary, Mrs R. \Vilson; treasurer, Mrs J.; Rogers: vice—presidents, Mesdames Holland, senior, and Knapp; committee, . Mesdames Pawson, Jenkins, Yates,‘ Russell; trustee, Mrs \Valker; reporter, . Mrs “'alker; advisory board, Mesdamos Tait, senior, Holland, senior, W'ilson} and Rogers. Messrs. R. Spearman andi n. matey kindly acted as auditors. i The president read her report tori the past twelve months, which showed 1 a great improvement on past years. The 1 balance sheet was also read and proved ‘ satisfactory. Three new membersi were enrolled. i The rest of the afternoon was spent in games. A herb—smelling competia lion, arranged by Mesdames Rogers and B. Housley, was won by Mrs B. Wilson. The musical parcel, No. i, was won by Mrs Holland, senior, the prize being donated by Mrs Tait. senior. The musical parcel, No. 2, was won by Mrs Paterson, Mrs Jenkins donating the prize. A hidden treasure competition, arranged by )lrsdames Holland, senior, and 'l‘.. iiclland, caused a lot of fun. There‘ were seven hidden prizes. Mrs I’hai-i lip found three. Mrs Paterson one, Mrs Yates one, and Mrs Ali’. Holland one. Songs were rendered by Mrs B.‘ llons- ; ley, and Mrs ’l‘ziwera played a piano} solo. } RAGLAN BRANCH. , —. ’ The Raslan—Kariori branch of the ‘Women's Division held their first [meeting for the year on May 7. There ;was a good attendance of members. :and also present were several Maori yladies who are interested in the work 10f the “‘omen‘s Division and desirous 10f forming a branch of their own. ‘Afier repeating the Creed 3 new roll—‘call of members took place. Corresypondence was then dealt with. 1 The president, Mrs \V. R. Moore, \then addressed the Maori ladies, ex—"plaining the aims and objects of the WVomen‘s Division. also methods of lworking the branch. The visitors seemed very interest and were invited to attend future meetings in order to get clearer views on the subject. A handsome woven llielt of unique de—sign. made by one of their number, was exhibited. A proposal that all members of the branch own a rule book resultr‘d in a good many orders for the ‘bOOk-fi. It was also derided to follow Miss Stops‘ suggestion, to amaign-nmte with the ln—stitute in regard to \V.E.A. lectures, Mrs I. )3. Jackson and Mrs V. E. Pegler volunteering to art in the matter of selecting and delivering the lectures. , The hostesses, tho Raglan East section, then put on their programme, consisting of riddles, dialogue, competi—‘tions and demonstrations of rug—lmakinrg, nil proving~ very interesting. The country section will put on the ‘vprogrammo for next month. ELSTOW JUNIOR BRANCH. ‘ The Elstow junior branch of the \Vomen’s Division of the Farmers' Union held its ilrst meeting of the mew year on Thursday afternoon. l‘Mise M. Clark presiding over a. good attendance of members. Correspond—‘enee and general business was dealt twitch first and a good part of the afternoon were devoted to looking lthrough a trial vbox study on “ Home gDyeing,” where the process of getting lthe different colours was explained tend demonstrated. Although it was i-deoided at the annual meeting to take a 'box study on home dressmaking this ‘year, members have come to the conclusion that there will not; be 'sumoient ‘time at the monthly meetings to do tthe studies thoroughly and 'have devcided to forego the idea. During the afternoon squares for the community quilt were distributed Iready for working. The competition ‘was for three plain scones and ‘a good number of entries was received. Miss F. 'Hair being the winner. Next month’s competition is for any article ;made from a 2511). flour-Ibex. Mrs B“. Priest was ecoorded a hearty vote of thanks for judging the competition. ‘ The hostesses for the afternoon were Misses M. Stewart, R. Horn and D. Eastwood.
