No finality was reached at e meetlns or the .\latamata Borough Council last evening when the proposed new ofliees were discussed. .\lt‘ Sehofleld expressed surprise thet the council had gone to the expense of having plans prepared as the time was not opportune to proceed with new emcee. Any money available would be better spent on roads and other works. Besides adding to the dignity of the town. the new ofllces were essential for the safe keeping of borough records and property, stated the Mayor. Mr \\'. A. Gordon. The rates had been reduced by in in the 13 during the past three years and there was £4OOO in hand. The interests of the ratepayers had been looked after, and now was the best. time to proceed with the project. .\lr J. Mciniyre agreed that the money would be better spent on roads while Messrs C- C. Vincent and W. .\i. Gritiiths supported the proposal. Mr Schofleld moved that the mutter be adjourned sine die, but the motion :was lost and a further motion that the matter be deferred for a fortnight (or further discussion was carried.
