LAND SETTLEMENT

WAIKATO SOCIETY. CONTINUED PROGRESS. LINE OF BULLOCKS SOLD. ‘ The increasing productivity of the land already in pasture under the Wailiato Land Settlement Society‘s scheme at \\'harepaps was shown in the fine condition of a line of 119 Pollecl Angus bullocks which were being prepared for removal to the freezing works when the hon. chair—man of the society, Mr D. V. Bryant, the hon. secretary, Mr H. \‘slder and Mr J. T. Johnson, a director, inspected the block yesterday. The bullocks which are four years old, proved a great asset to the settle—ment as they kept the young fern down in ploughed areas. During recent months they have been fat—tened and have been described by buyers as an excellent line. Some ot the larger beasts have been sold to er \V. B. Shattock, of Hamilton. ‘while the lighter animals will be killed ‘for chilling. ‘ The \Vharepapa block comprises over 3600 acres, 1000 acres of which are in grass or crops. About 2000 acres are in turnips. Variety of Stock. There are 123 cattle on the settlement and 2414 sheep, including 2025 breeding ewes. There is abundant feed for the stock which are in splendid condition. A considerable portion of the pasture has been renovated with surface sowing and there is any amount of feed.

There are 407 cattle on the Kai—mngl block including 232 steers and over 2000 sheep. AL Karakariki there are over 244 cattle and 1053 sheep. There are also a number of horses on each settlement block.

Seventeen familles are settled on the \Vharepapa block and the present good appearance of the block is ample evidence or the hard work they have put. into the land and is an indication that the settlers feel that the work is worth while. They are housed in neat and comfortable cottages and it is hoped to have a social hall and school in the near future.

The block is well watered from I stream which runs through the property. A reservoir built on a hlgh position provides water for various points of the farm, a considerable drop giving the necessary pressure. There are 23 families at the Kairangl settlement and 24 families at. Kara.kariki.

Considering the short time the land has been in cultivation remarkable progreSs "has been made and the present satisfactory position inspires coufldence for the future of the scheme.
