A Genuine Bet. At a .\lenangie Park meeting held recently an inquiry was held into the running of a horse. It was found that the horse had been genuinely hacked. and the explanations tendered were accepted. It would be interesting to know What amount of money is required to prove that. a horse has been genuinely backed. The fact that a horse has been backed does not necessarily prove that it is a genuine trier. nor does the non—backing of a horse prove that a bye is being run. If betting was accepted as a test of genuine running, then a reasonable amount “insurance" would be a great help if an inquiry took place. \Vhat takes place during the running 01’ a race is principally evidence of eyesight, and betting should be a matter of minor consideration. Apparently an owner in Australia dare not- allow a horse to run unbacked even. Has Not Earned It. i It is difficult to understand how i handicapper \V'. 1". The value of bloodstm‘k is being inhanred by the substantial increase of stakes in Australia and also in New Zeninnii. ’l‘he Cnuiflohi Cup goes up to 10.00050“ and names in llne with the Melbourne Cup nt‘ the same value. 'l‘he Epsom illnndicnp goes from 2000 sovs in Qilnnsovs, the Metropolitan from JmOOsovs to Bonnsovs. and no douhL the Sydney Cup will also receive a sub—stantial Increase in stakes. There will be great chanees for stayers in ihe not far distant future. in New Zealand the VV'ellington Racing Club has raised the stakes for the \Vinter meeting from 620050ve to 710050v5, and the Wellington Steeplechase will carry a stake of 75050v5. The Canterbury Jockey Club has already announced a substantial Increase of the stakes at—tached to the Grand National meeting. The increase amounts to DOOsovs, and those with an eye to the future will be getting ready to fill their stables with horses of the quality necessary to win the principal stskes on offer.
