The discussion arose when a motion was under consideration to authorise the Lord Mayor. Mr A. G. “'ales, to represent the City al the celebrations and to depute the Finance Committee to make the necessary arrangements. .\lr Treadwell said the proposal was reducing the council to the level of the state and Federal ParliamentS. where professional politicians were nothing but mendicanis. He had never heard in 25 years a suggestion that the Lord Mayor‘s expenses should be paid anywhere.
Sir Harold Gengoult Smith, who was the last Lord Mayor, said the motion amounted to a demand for an invitation to visit England. Mr Wales said he had not raised the matteiu llc hail already booked a. pas—sage in his private capacity. The motion was agreed to by 21 votes to four.
