PRIMARY PRODUCE BILL.
l UNDER cRITIGISM. I HESULUTIUN AT \VANUANUL I The largest meeting of dairy farm- ' ers ever held in Wanganui took place at the week-end, the Government's primary products marketing legislation being discussed. By a. majority vote a resolution v‘vas carried disapproving o! the measures because of the fact that vital particulars had not been forthcoming as to the following:— (1) The increased cost of factory supplies. such as coal, butter boxes. .etc. (2) The fixed price. (3) The approximate cost of overhead expenses to operate the scheme. (A) The added costs of running farms after other Government proposals are in operation. (5) How a deficit ls to be financed. (6) To what use any annual‘ surplus is to be put. The meeting also supported a reso—lution asking that before the scheme be implemented a ballot of dairy farmers be taken throughout the Dominion giving each supplier a vote to decide (1) whether the scheme is acceptable, a three—fourths majority to decide in favour; (2) whether it should be compulsory or voluntary in respect to each factory. Not Unanimous. It was further resolved that if the Government were not prepared to accord suppliers the right of a ballot the Legislative Council be asked to. refer the hill back to the House of‘ Representatives. A resolution was also carried that the Government safe- l guard the marketing organisation func- 1 tioning in New Zealand to-day. ‘ Seven factories had suppliers at the‘ meeting, representing annual outputs‘ of 3190 tons of butter and 650 tonsi of cheese. The meeting was not unani— t mous, and an indication of the voting; strength was gained on the two divi-j sions called. The one asking for a 1 ballot was supported by 58 to 117. and ‘ one to endorse the Bill was defeated by 60 to $9. In both instances a! number retrained from voting, as there were well over 200 present. I
