HOCKEY COMMENCES
OPENING TO-MORROW. [W PLAY IN PRELIMINARY ROUND. After a postponement last Saturday on account of the unfavourable ground and weather conditions, the preliminary round introducing the season of the Waikato Hookey Association will be commenced at Steele Park to-morrow. Four teams are entered, but Cambridge will also be 'competitors when the trophy competitions are started on May 23. On the form of previous seasons, Old Boys and 'Colts should provide an interesting match, while Old Technicals, freshened with young players of considerable promise, should provide adequate opposition to Kaipaki, who won the Hooper Cup last year. A start will also be made with the preliminary round to the junior competition, while ladies’ practice games have been arranged for Boyes Park. The draw is as follows: — Seniors. —Old Boys v. (Times’ Representative). TE AWAMUTU, Friday. Adverse weather conditions militated against hockey enthusiasts at Te Awamutu, commencing the season’s play last week, but a start will be made to-morrow, when a full programme will be played. The main attractions at Te Awamutu will be the meeting of Te Awamutu A and Te Awamutu B at 2.30 p.m., and the game between Te Rahu and High School at 1.30 p.m.. Otorohanga Colts will meet at Otorohanga and a match will be played between Paterangi and Pirongia on the latter club’s ground. The teams engaged at Te Awamutu will be picked from the following:— Te Awamutu A.—F. Battson, R. Hinton, J. Sinnott, R. Burns, R. O. Finch, R. Quinlan, B. Prince, E. Penny, J. Smith, B. Gibson, 'H. The entry of Korakonui and Old Girls into the competitions conducted by the Waipa Ladies’ Hockey Association should lend further interest to the ladies’ side of the sport this year. Tho season will start to-morrow. The draw for to-morrow’s games is as follows:—Hairinl v. Korakonui, Pirongia v. Paterangi, Old Girls v. Otorohanga. OTOROHANGA CLUBS.
