Currency In London.—Fine gold was quoted in London yesterday at £7 Os 8d an ounce (£7 Os Aid on Tuesday). the dollar M 4.96 (11.96 9-16). and the francs at 75 11-32 (75 7-16).
French Bank Rate. Halal—A cable message from Paris states that the French bank rate has been raised to six per cent. Other rates have also been raised.
Westport Goal Company.~—The directors or the \Vesiport Coal Company, Limited. have declared an interim dividend of Gd a share, unchanged, payable on May 28.
Denllng In Farms.—Conslderable ac—tivity in the land market 15 reported from Upotiki, a number 01' farms hav—lng changed hands. Some of the sales have been cash transactions.
Aerodrome Extenalon.—The Central Hawke‘s Bay Aero Club has purchased an additional 33 acres to enlarge the aerodrome at. VVaipukurau. The club proposes to spend £IB,OOO on the scheme.

Maorla and quuor.—At \Vhakatane yesterday Mr E. L. \anton. 5..\1., Ilned W. E. \VCDDCI', Alexander Walker and C- \V. Rundell for supplying native girls with liquor. In doing so he expressed the opinion that. the supplying of liquor to Maori glrlvs and prohlbited natives was far too common. He said liquor is ruining the Maori character, and a white man should have more sense than to supply them.
Oollupu of Brldae.—A large bridge at Makarlka, Poverty Bay. collapsed on Tuesday night, and a six-wheeled truck, which “as crossing at the time was considerably damaged. The bridge is on the main road between Tokomaru Bay and lluatol‘ia. and for a time traffic was held up. Communicalion was laier established byihe old ford, and so long as no heavy rain fails. it is expected that this will meet the situation.
New Inland Paper Mlll|.—Tiie annual report of New Zeaiand Paper Mills. Limited. states that there is a balance available of £23,973. includ—ing 212.210 brought forward. Alter deducting an interim dividend of 3 per cent, which required £4500, there is left available for disiribuiion £19,473. Missing OWL—Megan John. aged 12. has been missing since Monday morning. She was sent to school at Vogeltown but did not so. It was later found that she had called at the Mangorei dairy factory on Monday and also received some refreshments from a resident at ’l‘arikl. A girl of similar appearance called at a tea room at Siratford on Monday evening. and stated she was waiting for an aunt who was to take her to Auckland. The guard on the Auckland train, however. states that no girl answering the description of Megan John travelled on the train.

cerning the death of Ilaroid Frederick Taylor (18), who was found dead below Grafton 'Bridge on Sunday morning. The evidence showed that deceased was of nervous temperament. and though he enjoyed good health was reserved and unoommunicative. In returning a verdict of suicide by jumping from the bridge the Coroner said that “a couple of strands of pig \vire placed along the top of the parapet would stop some of these peeple.”

Tree Planting (uranium—The campaign instituted some months ago by Mr W. ii. Paul: president or the Hamilton Beautit'ylng Society. to encourage the planting of trees, by the issue 0! a series of stickers depicting New Zealaud native trees. has been enthusiastically taken up by the Wellington Education Board.
