Mr Sargent appeared for Shirley. Edward John Hill. mmmission agent. of Greymouth. husband of the late Mrs Hill, said he asked Mrs Shirley ‘what she would charge to perform an operation and she said £ls. \\'itness isaid he would call on her one day the tfollowing week. The telephone conversation had been at Ilie end of tFebruary or the, beginning of March. Witness had worried but Mrs Shirley had said there was nothing to worry about. On Saturday, March H, wit—ness had come to Christchurch with his wife and the following day they had gone to Mrs Shirley‘s plat-e where they had discussed the prire of an operation. \Viiness described what happened at Mrs Shirley's place and said that he had given Mrs Shirley three £5 notes. \\'ituess then repeated the conversation he had had with Mrs Shirley. At this stage Chief-Detective. l)un~ lop asked that a provisional order prohibiting the publication of telephone numbers should he made. It was his intention to produce certain toil Cards. He submitted they were private documents and it was only in exceptional cases that they were available. In objecting to the order Mr Sar—gent said that if the request were. granted it meant that. the right of newspapers to publish anything at any time could be stopped- He submitted that the Court had not the power. The Magistrate said he would make an order in the meantime. The Court was adjourned until tomorrow. Bail was allowed accused in self £SOO, and one surety of £SOO or two of £250.
