The Italian native column having effected a junction with the mechanised troops, amid ecstasies of enthusiasm. Marshal Badoglio, while aeroplanes new overhead, entered the city on a white charger at the head of a regiment of Bcrsaglieri, with plumed helmets and grey-green uniforms, with Signor Alesandeo Lessona, Minister of Colonies, -and Signor Guiseppe Bottani, Governor of Rome, 'beside him. Grenadiers, alpini, staff officers, newspapermen, and field kitchens, in addition to regiments of line engineers and Black Shirt volunteers, followed. The news of • the arrival flew in a score of different languages to thousands of refugees at the Legation, and the guards relaxed their vigilance for the first time since Sunday’s reign of terror, which culminated in M. Bodart ordering a number of mutineers to be shot in order to ensure the safety of the legations. The work of the British Legation staff and guards, many of whom had no -sleep for three days, was beyond praise. King Victor’s Gratitude.
