A BITTER CAMPAIGN.
N.S.W. ELECTIONS.
SIGNIFICANT DEVELOPMENT.
FEDERAL MINISTRY EMBARRASSED United Press Assn.—Elec. TeL Copyright. SYDNEY, October 1. The New South Wales general election campaign probably is the most bitter on record. Commercial interests are speculating where the Labour leader, Mr J. T. Lang, proposes to obtain his millions to enable him to fulfil his lavish promises. The Premier, Mr T. R. Bavin, and his supporters are telling the people that to return Mr Lang’s party will be to spell disaster not only to the State but to the Commonwealth. There was a significant development to-day, when Mr Lang appeared unexpectedly at Canberra. It is understood he asked the Federal Cabinet to refrain from announcing a reduction in the salaries and wages of publlo servants on the ground that it would prejudice the New South Wales Labour Party’s chances at the forthcoming election. Mr Lang is said to have claimed that Labour’s return to power in this State was already assured. He then left for the adjoining centre, Queanbeyan,. where he kept in touch with the Federal Cabinet doings. It is further reported from Canberra this evening that a threat hangs over the Federal Cabinet that any of its New South Wales members who agree to reductions in salaries and wages will be asked to resign and be replaced by others who will give effect to the New South Wales Labour Party’s policy. The Federal Ministry, therefore, faces an embarrassing situation. 0
