REMOVAL OF POLITICAL CONTROL.
OTHER MEASURES SUGGESTED
(Times Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, Tuesday. The following are among the recommendations of the Railways Commission report which was presented in the House of Representatives this afternoon. The removal of the management from political control, and the appointment of directors having complete control over the whole operations. Staff reduction by dispensing with ail surplus labour. Increases in passenger fares, holiday excursion rates, and certain goods freights. Higher charges for carriage of mails. , . Complete revision of staff conditions and the staff itself so that salaries and wages will bear a proper relation to revenue. A further writing down of railway capital by £1,900,000. The reduction of train services on unprofitable branch lines. To provide reasonable facilities for the ■ carriage of goods and the discontinuance of passenger traffic on some branches, and the coordination of road and rail traffic. The report estimates that the economies suggested would amount approximately to £294,000. This amount, together with increased revenue should assist the finances of the department to an extent of approximately £628,000 annually.
