GRETNA GREEN ROMANCE.
LOVERS’ PLANS FRUSTRATED.
The road to Gretna Green has been the scene of an elopement drama reminiscent of the 18th century, but with motor cars replacing coach and horses. The parties to the romance were a young commercial traveller of Leeds and a pretty school teacher at Blackpool. . , , The pair decided to be married at Gretna Green, but on arrival on the Scottish border the bridegroom found that his holiday funds had given out. He wired for cash to his father, the money to be sent to the Longtown post office, near Carlisle, and called for there. As Longtown is the last English town before reaching the border tha father’s suspicions were aroused, and in a motor car, his eldest son with him, he raced northwards in pursuit. Appeals to Bride. When the lovers came to draw the money they got a surprise. Outside the post office a heated scene ensued, father and brother attempting to dissuade the bridegroom from the contemplated step, and also appealing to the bride. Although they w'ere unable to go on with the marriage the lovers refused to be parted, and eventually turned their car southwards.-
