BRITAIN AND AUSTRALIA
DEVELOPfi/JEMT OF TRADE. of the Empire Industries .Association of Abingdon-strect, Westminster, in a letter to The London Daily Mail, states: I was informed toy. the President of the Board of Trade, Mr Graham, in Parliament last week that the value of the imports into Great Britain and Northern Ireland in 1928 of wheal and meat from the Argentine and Australia were £43,500,000 and £ll,250,000 respectively. When we turn to the exports, Australia purchased from us in 1928 nearly £2,000,000 worth of silk and artificial silk goods, the Argentine just over £200,000 worth, so in the matter of silk gooes Australian custom is worlh ten times Argentine custom. Nevertheless we are committing ourselves deliberately to the Argentine as a source of wheat and meat supplies without apparently any consideration for the future development of Australia. Mr Graham stated afterwards that he understood that “Hus matter is engaging the attention of the Argentine Government.” 1 would respectfully point out that this is a matter which should more properly be engaging t-lie attention of the British Government.
