LOSSES ON RAILWAYS

Losses of £2,084,000 on the State railways and £348,250 on trams during the year are forcast by the treasurer, Hon B. S. B. Stevens, in a financial statement to the Assembly. Among the proposals for dealing with the problem is the recovery of a portion of the business lost to road transport. Legislation is being considered authorising the withholding of lower freight rates from consignors who utilise road transport for a porton of their business; also to withhold in similar cases the starving stock rate. The passenger concession fares will be reviewed.
