Two sharp riots occurred at Calcutta when the carters, bitterly resenting the recent legislation reducing the loads lo be carried on bullock and buffalo carts, unhooked their carls and blocked the roads and tram lines in the busiest part of the city. They received the police with showers of brickbats. The mob, getting out of hand, police fired on the.crowd. Two hours later a more serious riot occurred. The total casualties known arc five killed and GO injured including a number of police; infact the commissioner estimates every second policeman was hurl.
