AMATEUR ATHLETICS.
A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING PUKEIVIIRO MINERS’ UNION SPORTS Favoured with perfect weather, and before a fair gathering of people, the annual sports of the Pukemiro Miners’ Union were held bn the sports ground. The officials are to be congratulated on the manner in which the sports were conducted, the length's programme being- gone through without a hitch, and in good time. The president of the union, Mr Garrick, had a very busy day, and was ably assisted by the following: Starter, Mr Brown (Glen Afton) ; handicapper, Mr J. Walker; judges, Messrs Haley and Hadley; announcer, Mr Lyons.
Events for smaller children were run off before lunch. A pleasing event of the afternoon was the assembling of the tiny tots to each receive a threepenny-piece and an apple. Trophies for events for chil- • dren were provided by the trustees of the Herbert Smith Trust Fund. At the conclusion of the sports prizes won during the day were presented by Mr J. Pictures and Dance, As a fitting conclusion to a good day’s entertainment children were admitted free to the pictures in the evening.
After the pictures the hall was cleared and the adults indulged in dancing until midnight.
