FIELDS FOR SATURDAY*. FORM OF THE CANDIDATES. Among the lesser lights booked to compete at Claudelands on Saturday arc several trotters and pacers with no form of any description to recommend them, of Ll l o novices who competed at (lie Thames meeting and who are acceptors for the Waikato lixturc, those who showed any promise could be counted on the fingers of one hand. Tiny Rose’s Form. Tiny Rose, an aged Our Thorpe mare, was making her first appearance when she contested the llikulaia Handicap at Thames and her display was in that event poor. She atoned somewhat by finishing last into third place in the saddle event when paying a century for a win. Next time out Tiny Rose will not be at such long odds for il may be presumed that she will go one better as she gains confidence with experience. Will Need To Improve. Spendthrift, who is owned at Waihou, did not go far in the llikutaia Handicap before she was completely last and well tailed off. Considerable improvement will need to be shown by this Gold Bell marc before she can. be classed as a possibility in the minor divisions. Probably the Pick. Inverness is probably the pick of those racing in tiic novice class on Saturday, for he lias only started six times in his career and lias won once, occupied second place twice and third a like'number of times. He is by no means an attractive fellow but one of Ihose plain honest kind. He has shown 'nothing as yet lo warrant him turning nut above the ordinary, but there should lie some more stake money for him. Late with the Papers. . The four-year-old Whakuhihi by Worthy Bond, was taken iu the Thames meeting hut unfortunately for his trainer who was desirous of giving him a run in public lie had to be scratched. Jt appears that the owner of lilt*, maiden failed to reach the course in time with his registration papers through a mishap to a motor car and Whakuhihi was not eligible to start. With the Square Gaiters. Lackicwood, Hie double gaited black gelding, owned by Mr Jj. \Y. Thomas, of Xgaruawuhia, during several of his Jalesl starts lias competed with I Ik* square-gaiters. lie was scon hoppled up in the saddle event at Thames but got badly away. The son of Wildwood June, is in with the square- j gaiters on Saturday.
My Thorpe Unlucky. Only for striking a lot of trouble with seven furlongs to be covered in tiie Turua Handicap My Thorpe would undoubtedly have won at the Thames meeting. As it was lie ran fourth after making up considerable ground, being a little over two lengths away, knocking approximately four seconds off his handicap time. Off Hie limit on Saturday he looks a good proposition. A Return to the Game. Dawdler, after a spell of nine months, competed in the fast mile and a quarter at Parawai. He was in with the leaders for part of the journey but faded hack with half the distance to go. Racing should improve Dawdler and jt can be expected that he will earn a stake before tlie season closes. He is down lo compete in the Farewell Handicap on Saturday, and interest will he attached to tlie way lie shapes. Has Been a Winner. When Paradigm won aL ihe Otahuliu meeting lie went 4.41 3-5. He competed twice at Thames, once among ihe pacers and later in' his own domain, Hie trolling event. In this race lie was conceding 144yds and was not so l'ar away at tiie finish. He i is likely lo be in some favour off a 4.47 mark 1 oil Saturday. Was Lame at Thames. Being decidedly lame Ilaroto could not muster up his usual clash when seen out at Parawai and it is doubtful if he will be sound for tiie approaching meeting. Some weeks ago lie met with an injury to a foot and though it was expected that he would be in tlie right order for last week’s meeting, such did not prove to be the case and lie finished well back. Has Some Prospect. liaerenga Pai is by no means a bril-
liant mare but in moderate company ! there is always a chance of her bringing off a surprise. In Hie Kerepeeni Handicap at Hie Thames meeting she finished fourth, being delayed at Hie start. Lucy Bell played up badly at Hie send on and liaerenga rai suiiered from her antics. That is one reason why her fourth place effort was a creditable oneWas a Little Unlucky. When Dealer finished third in his only start at Thames lie did so after being chopped out when making his ] run half a mile from the post. It appeared as if Hohoro came in on him when Dealer was half a length behind him on tlie fence. Through being so checked lie lost sufficient ground to make him unable to lessen the gap between the leaders. Dealer is engaged in the Raglan Handicap on Saturday, but lie will be meeting a tough one in Sir Guy. Another Duel Ahead. When Araehne last raced it was in tlie chief event on the si jond day of!' the Hawke’s Bay meeting. She finished in second place to Sir Guy, while two days previously Arachne j had occupied third place to All Red and Sir Guy in the Hawke’s Bay Cup. j The last named and tiie Epsom trained mare will have another duel in the Raglan Handicap on Saturday, but Sir Guy should again show his superiority for lie is Hie more reliable of Hie ; pair. i Etta Cole and Her Ways. j It was thought by sending Etta Cole t South that she would become more f i tractable as far ns her racing was i c concerned. Her sojourn in Christ- jj: church failed to bring about tlie desired result and after competing at i tlie Wellington meeting where she l failed badly twice she was returned to I Epsom. How Etta Cole will fare on Saturday remains to be seen but she A will need to have improved vastly to T lead the field home. . H
To Make His Bow Here. ' Dan Direct, who was imported from England by F. J- Smith, the ex-Mid-dlesex trainer, is due lo make his bow to tile New Zealand public at Claudelands. A roan in colour he is credited with possessing speed, but as yet it is possible that he is not thoroughly acclimatised. A Keen Tussle. There is likely lo be a keen struggle between R. A. McMillan, of Tamaherc, W. Hughes, of Longburn (Manawatu), and J. T. Paul, of Mangcre, for the North Island winning drivers supremacy this season. McMillan lias thirteen wins lo his credit, Hughes and Paul having each twelve. Both McMillan and Paul will lie at Claudelands on Saturday, and interest will centre about their doings. Stoney’s Latest Form. Whether Mrs I. E. Sweetapple is going to get back any more of the purchase price she expended in acquiring Hie Australian-bred . sloney only Hie future can tell- So far Hie white pacer has only given one respectable race since coming to New Zea- i land- when he ran third in February, earning £25. lie gave a disappoint-
ing display in the Thames Cup and appears to be a perplexing proposition. Candidate for the Mile. Though claiming Iwo engagements at the Thames meeting Nella Dillon was not harnessed up again after running unplaced in the lverepeehi Handicap. Nella Dillon ran sixth in her only attempt but keen students of form will be prepared to see her more prominent in the mile event on Satiuday. Never Like a Winner. Though Carnui was a quiet tip at Thames he never went like a winner at any stage and finished well down the straight. He is booked to compete in two events on Saturday, the Progressive and Dominion Handicaps. To win ci thor lie will have to show a big improvement on last week’s form. As he may not have been at his best then it is possible that he may figure more conspicuously when next seen out.
