ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS.
•“Weights,” Morrinsville.—When Valreina won the Putaruru Stakes at the -Matamata meeting on February 8 she carried 8.4. Tradesman, who was third, had 7.0. “Interested,” Ngaroto.— Crimestor contested the Wynyard Plate at the Takapuna Jockey Club’s Summer meeting. >Hc ran unplaced. “Racegoer,” Hamilton.— (1) There were no hurdle races on the Gisborne Club’s Summer meeting programme. (2) H. Gray and R. Reed were the respective jockeys when Habit beat The Swell in the President’s Handicap at Woodville in February.
GOSSIP FROM ALL PARTS,
The Whangarei Club’s Autumn meeting will be held on Thursday and Saturday.
The South Canterbury Club will race on Thursday and Saturday.
There will be racing at Masterton on Friday and Saturday next.
Irate trainer to rider after the race: Didn't I tell you to be with ’em? Rider: Well, I was with ’em —at the harrier.
Hoylake is in good fettle at present, and he is likely to play a prominent part in the Timaru Cup tomorrow.
Toxeuma will see a short price in the Ormond Gold Cup. It is a pity he was not entered for ..the North Island Challenge Stakes, writes “The Watcher.”
There is a smattering of the Waikato about the field for the hurdles at 'Timaru to-morrow. Rangitahi and Heisler, who are engaged in the race ahead, were trained at Te Rapa a few seasons back.
Chrysology gave himself a slight knock in the interval between Trentham and Awapuni, which was the reason why he did not fulfil his engagements in the Sires’ Produce Stakes and Manawatu Stakes.
Tambourine, who is an acceptor for tiie Portland Hack Handicap at Whangarei to-morrow is an improving hack and in this company should be showing up. The Lucullus —-Tact Ally finished third in her two starts at six furlongs at the Rotorua meeting in February. She was running on strongly each time and as she was in need of racing is likely to have been benefited by these outings-
Gay Crest has been responsible for some good track work lately, and he should play a prominent part in his engagement in the Kcrrytown Hack Handicap at South Canterbury. He has shown that he can stay and he should be out of hack class very soon.
Norval Tea has given evidence of being possessed of ample speed but the Tea Tray—. Miss Norval filly stops very quickly. The distance of the Trial Stakes at Whangarei to-morrow will afford her better prospects than the journeys she has been racing over of late but the five furlongs of the journey ahead will be sufficiently l'ar if Norval Tea is to be in front at the judge's box.
There was more incompetent riding at Awapuni writes “The Watcher.” Some of the apprentices do not appear to realise that to pass a horse you have to go round, and not over the top of it.
Le Choucas won the Mclnnes Memorial Handicap at Whangarei last season with 7.9. The Magpie—Kiki gelding, who had the Cup at Tauranga to his credit last month, is an acceptor for the leading race at Whangarei to-morrow and there will be many expecting him to be the most prominent when the mile and a quarter has been run out. Le Choucas has 8.0 to-morrow and he should be handy in the small field.
At the sale of yearlings held at Trentham in the summer of 1928 a bay colt by Tea Tray from Taiamai gave rise to spirited bidding, and he was bought by Mr A. 13. Williams for 600 guineas. 111-luck befell the youngster, and his near bind pastern was injured so seriously that lie had to be withdrawn from all engagements. The coit, who was named Tea Urn, was sent up to auction at Trentham in January, 1929, and was allowed to go at 150 guineas, Mr J. Ross, of Oamaru, being the buyer. Tea Urn, who is a brother to Ti Tree, is stated to have furnished into a nice horse,, and is regarded in the light of a bargain. lie is engaged in the Autumn Stakes at Timaru to-morrow.
Biddy Comet is showing steady improvement. The Day Comet —-Lady Biddy Ally ran two good seconds at Te Aroha meeting last month, the first occasion at seven furlongs and the latest at six furlongs and 52 yards. On this form Biddy Comet will be entitled to some consideration in the Maungatapere Hack Handicap, of six furlongs, at Whangarei to-morroew, in which she has 7.1.
Treasury, who is an acceptor for the Portland and the Maungatapere Hack Handicaps al Whangarei to-mor-row, is a member of .T- T. Jamieson’s team at Takanini. The Grandcourt —- Peptamint three-year-old gelding won over live furlongs at New Plymouth in February with 5.7 when lie ran the journey in 1.2. Treasury lias a lot of speed which will he a big advantage on the Whangarei track where lie should prove troublesome to the opposition to-morrow.
On Top requires a strong horseman if the best is to be obtained from the Surveyor—Te Moti gelding. No one has handled him better in his races this year than Hector Gray, who piloted On Top to victory on each of the two days at Rotorua. On Top has 9.7 in the Portland Hack Handicap at Whangarei to-morrow. Gray will not be available on this occasion, hut On Top, if well served on the score of horsemanship, will be hard to beat despite his big weght.
Starshooter is due to make his appearance in the Timaru Cup field tomorrow, and he looks a likely sort to run on a long way in that event under his light weight. He has a staying pedigree and he ran out a good mile and a quarter in the Peninsula Cup, since which event he has done very well in his training.
Quincoma is down to contest the hurdles at Whangarei to-morrow. The Quin .Abbey—Tecoma gelding lias not been concerned in this department of late, but lie won in the division at Trentham some time back. As Quincoma lias had several outings on the Hat at this season he is well forward so far as condition is concerned.
If A. McAulay and It. Reed were in the limelight .with N'ighLmarch ten days ago at Moorefleld, they scored a real success on Saturday at Rosehill with True Shaft. The Arrowsmith gelding recorded a good effort in running tlie seven furlongs in train 26 sec. Malvina and Luita, who followed him home, are just fair performers, and even if there does not appear to be outstanding merit in his performance through their form and at the weights, no doubt, his success lias started Hie autumn venture the right way financially.
Hipo, although now in the veteran stage, lias the ability to turn up at odd intervals. The Potoa—High Jinks gelding, .who is engaged in the Mclnnes Memorial Handicap and the Waipu Handicap at Whangarei tomorrow worked particularly well at Ellersiie the other morning, when he ran six furlongs in i.lB 1-5 and was doing it comfortably. W. 11. Jones is to ride ilipo 10-morrow.
It has been decided that Concentrate will have to miss ills Sydney Cup engagement, and lie was withdrawn by cablegram on Monday morning. Cimabue, however, is to go l'or Ills Doncaster Handicap engagement, and leaves Wellington on Friday. Whether he wil\ be accompanied by Royal Duke and Gesture is as yet undecided.
Branson beat a useful field when he scored in the sprint event on the concluding day of the Ohinemuri Club’s meeting. The Greyspear— Garston gelding was favoured by a run on the rails over the concluding stages of that race but, this apart, his effort indicated that he is coming back to form. Branson is engaged in the Stewards’ Handicap at Whangarei to-morrow and despile the fact that he .will have 9.0 to carry he should be capable of a prominent showing.
J. T. Jamieson’s stable was right out of luck at Awapuni. Vali was a good thing beaten in the Prince of Wales Handicap, Eaglet got a poor spin in the Awapuni Gold Cup, and Chief Joy on the second day took no part in his race through moving back at the start. The only consolation was Hard Words running second in the Sires’ Produce Stakes, which would probably have been a third had Cylinder not lost his rider. Jamieson’s team is very well at present.
White Ringlet has two victories to her credit this season, these being recorded at the Rotorua and Opotiki meetings respectively. There was some merit in her win at Rotorua as she accounted for a fairly useful field of sprinters on the concluding day at that fixture. It is in White Ringlet's favour that she is a good beginner, a point which will weigh with investors when she contests the Stewards’ Handicap, at Whangarei to-morrow, in which event she has the handy weight of 7.1.
The Franklin Club will show a useful profit from its annual meeting, which was held last month. It is the club's intention to go ahead with building improvements at its headquarters at Pukelcohe, the scheme to provide for main stand accommodation for the new season of racing. This club has had very successful meetings since it has been racing under totalisalor auspices and the popularity of them will advance as time goes on-
Currajong’s recent form has been of the attractive brand. The Lucullus —Minsk gelding had two seconds to his credit against useful fields of hacks at Tc Aroha, while he followed this up with a win at the Franklin meeting last month. Currajong claims engagement in the open sprint, the Stewards’ Handicap, also the Maungatapere Hack Handicap at Whangarei to-morrow. While he is, a possibility in the former, it is certain that he will claim good support if produced in the hack race. JOCKEY AS TRAINER. CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. The jockey, C. Emerson, has decided to launch out as a public trainer, and will shortly apply for a licence. He has puebased a small block of land facing the Yaldhurst Road in close proximity io the racecourse, and will proceed immediately with the erection of a residence and stables. Emerson does not intend to relinquish riding, which he hopes to combine with his training in the meantime, at least.

REMOVED BY COMMITTEE. RENNIE, McBAE AND GILMER. AUCKLAN D, Wedncsday. A decision to remove the suspension imposed on the jockeys W. A. Rennie (Cambridge), J. If. Mcßae (Te Awamutu), and A. J. Gilmer (Franklon) as from May 31 was made by the Auckland District Committee yesterday. In June, 1928, as a result of an inquiry into the riding of horses in the two highweight handicaps at the Rotorua races in the preceding February, the judicial committee of the Rotorua Racing Club disqualified Rennie and Gilmer for 12 months, and Mcßae l'or six months. The jockeys appealed, and the Auckland District Committee, in dismissing the appeals, increased the penalty in each case to two years’ disqualification as from June 29, J 928. Subsequently the disqualification was altered to suspension. The effect of Ihe action of ille DisIrict Committee in reducing (lie term by a month, lo end on May 31, is that tlie jockeys, if they succeed in obtaining licenses, will lie able to ride at the Auckland Racing Club’s winter meeting in June. They arc all hurdle horsemen, so that the concession will come at an opportune lime for (hem. The winter is their busiest season, so that if Rennie, .Mcßae, and Gilmer were nol lo get their licenses then it would mean that lo all intents and purposes their suspension would be three years instead of iwo-
