“AROUND THE WORLD.”
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —Every day another cosmic sundowner or peripatetic globe-trotter passes through our fair city and, from observations, usually leaves the place better off than when he arrived. According to their respective stories, these gentlemen, plastered With testimonials and labels, are walking, cycling, hopping, or motoring round the world. I wish to make it clear that I am attacking no one of them in particular, but for the life of me I cannot see what contribution they are making to civilisation, to science, or even to their own souls. The New Zealand public appears to be ready to accept any number of these wanderers. One man here recently claims that he never begs, borrows or steals, and he started out penniless. Yes, of course, there’s a catch in it! For the sum of Is you get a card bearing his‘'name and the distance he has travelled, etcetera. If a man cannot travel abroad without all this paraphernalia he should remain in iiis home town. —I am, etc., FED UP.
