OPPOSITION SUCCESS. GOVERNMENT MOTION DEFEATED. CRIES OF “ RESIGN 1 ” United Press Assn. —Elec. Tel.—Copyright. (Received April I, 1.50 p.m.) * LONDON, March 31. The House of Commons is taking advantage of the non-return of many Labour members from distant constituencies. The Opposition, by a snap vote of 183 to 179, defeated a Government .motion to suspend the 11 o’clock rule. There were instant cries of “ Resign!’’ The Speaker ruled out Mr. Neville Chamberlain’s motion for an adjournment to enable the Government to consider the position. Mr. Ramsay MacDonald laughingly twitted Mr. Chamberlain on his overanxiety. The vote merely meant that the House would not sit after 11 o’clock. Mr. Chamberlain moved to adjourn the debate, but .the motion was defeated. by 185 to 175 amid Ministerial cheers. Business then proceeded. Mr. MacDonald informed Mr. Soutiiby that the Government adhered to its determination to arrive at a fivePower naval agreement and not between two or three of them.
