COUNSEL AND DEBTOR. AMUSING CROSS-EXAMINATION. A little brightness was introduced by a debtor in the Hamilton MagisIrate's Court, to-day, into what ordinarily would probably have been an uninteresting cross-examination as to his means. .Counsel for creditor asked debtor what tie was doing at present. Debtor: I am doing a little fish business. Counsel: Do you mean a little business in fish ? His Worship: He may be engaged in the whitebait industry (laughter). Counsel: Where do you fish ? Debtor: In the sea (laughter). Counsel: Have you got a boat of your own ?—No. Counsel: Do you hire one ? No, I borrow one. Counsel: Have you a banking account ? Yes, but there’s nothing in it, (laughter). Counsel: And what do you actually do ? Work. Counsel: What kind of work? Hard work (laughter). Council: And what do you earn ? Money. Counsel: Yes, but how much ? Debtor: All I can (laughter). Counsel: But what are your weekly earnings ? About £4. The Magistrate: How many fish have you to catch daily to make that much ? Debtor: About eight dozen. Counsel: What do you hope to get out of this business ? All I can make (laughter). No order was made.
