AUSTRALIAN COALMINES

AN ABORTIVE CONFERENCE. PITS MAY BE RE-OPENED. United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel.—Copyright. SYDNEY, March 30. Another conference between lhe coalmine owners and the miners was held yesterday. High hopes of an early resumption of work in the mines had been built upon it. However, the delegates were unable to agree after two hours’ consideration of the situation. The Prime Minister, Mr J. 11. Scullin made it plain, that financial assistance from the Federal Government was out of the question, but he said that some form of tariff protection against coal imports might be possible. The Commonwealth would cooperate in plans for the stabilisation of the industry and in finding employment for surplus miners. It is believed that the pits may be re-opened without a further conference.
