LOCAL AND GENERAL.
The 66th anniversary of the commencement of the famous battle of Orakau, near Cambridge, is being commemorated to-day. One of the Auckland cricket selectors and a member of the Auckland Cricket Association, Mr E. C. Beale, contemplates leaving next month on a visit to England, where he hopes to see the Australian cricketers in action this year. Members of the Waikato Mounted Rifles were entertained at an enjoyable concert provided by a party of Hamiltonians who journeyed out to Hopu Hopu on Saturday night. The programme was as follows: Miss T. Gould, elocutionary items; Miss Duff, songs and sketches at the piano; Miss L. Edmonds, dancing; Messrs B. N. and I. Anderson, songs. To-day marks an important stage in the commercial history of Otago, when a merger takes effect .of two large and important business concerns, Cadbury Bros., Ltd., and R. Hudson and Company, Ltd., both of whom engage in manufacture of chocolates and confectionery. The business will be carried on under the style of Cadbury, Fry and Hudson, Ltd. The directors will be Messrs Richard Hudson (chairman), G. Sara, R. G. Hudson and V. C. Smith. An entirely new estimate of the amount of mortgages in force in New Zealand has been compiled by the Government Statistician. No official calculation on this subject has been issued since the return published in the 1927 Year Book, which gave a total as at March 31, 1926, of £282,733,589. The total mortgage liability on land of which returns are required by landholdings exceeding £SOO in unimproved value is now calculated to be £152,000,000.
A suggestion that a large section of the Labour movement might declare “black” the committee set up to inquire into the Workers’ Compensation Act owing to Labour not being consulted in the appointment of its representative, was referred to the chairman, Mr S. G. Smith, M.P., at New Plymouth. Mr Smith said the committee would go on with its investigations. lie w'ould hesitate to think that there was any truth in the statement. At a meeting of the joint committee of the Auckland Winter Exhibition the financial statement showed the total receipts for 1929 amounted to £BSBI, including a balance of £7-12 from the previous year. The total sum was made up as follows: —Gate takings, £3591; sale of space, £2744; sale of timber, £790; sale of electric light, £214. Of the expenditure £2489 was paid for building and fittings, the Auckland Harbour Board received £635 in rent, materials and wages, and £674 was spent in trophies and prize-money. Subsidies amounting to £IOO were paid to the Kennel and Poultry Clubs. The balance of £IBOO was on a comparative basis the same as for 1928. The Auckland Agricultural and Pastoral Association and the Auckland Manufacturers’ Association shared the amount equally. To be able lo save two pounds on a smart fur trimmed coat right at Ihe commencement of a season is an opportunity that does not occur every year, but Hooker and Kingston’s have just opened this morning from London one case containing scvcnly-five beautiful coals, all lavishly fur trimmed. Their Home buyers were fortunate in getting them at a wonderfully low price—that is Lhe whole reason these garments are being sold at 79/6. Every coat is worth £5 15s to £6 17s Gd. Don’t delay a moment. The very best values in coals this season wilf be at Hooker and Kingston’s.
