PICKING BULL CALVES
IRISH GOVERNMENT ADVICE. Tills is how the Irish Government talks to its farmers regarding bull calves: —Having regard to the fine stocks of dual-purpose cows bo be found in practically every district in the country, and also to the adequate supply of good bulls available for mating with these cows, there should be little or no difficulty In picking out hull calves which will develop into animals well a'bove the present standard. _ ~ , The bull calves selected should be level, wide, deep and short-legged, and should be well coloured. It is a great mistake to retain narrow, weedy calves in the hope that they may improve with age. . ■Unless a bull calf is promising at an early age it will prove much better in the owner's own interest to have the animal castrated. , rl The aim of all stock owners should be to produce and use bulls above tic ordinary licensing standards. • only by so doing that the rapid im provement which modern conditions demand can be achieved and the time is fast coming when the use of m ferior, and even moderate, bulls w’ l prove even a -greater source of individual and national loss than it ha been in the past-
