Pahu and Ruanui lerl right round to the half mile from The Swell and Shrewd with Dolomite, Merry Damon and Balloon following in close order. Balloon and Shrewd moved up going to the turn where Pahu, Ruanui, Shrewd and Balloon were practically in line, with Merry Damon coming up on the rails. A great finish saw Pahu win by a neck from Merry Damon, who heat The Swell by a neck wilh Shrewd and iUianui heads away. Dolomite was next. The Rfianawatu Stakes. In the Manawatu Stakes Paganelli was odds-on, with Cimabue at good odds. Paganelli received all the best of the start from Ceremony, Toxeuma, Lady Pam and Cimabue in a bunch. Paganelli was joined by Lady Pam inside a furlong, the pair being clear of Toxemua and Cimabue racing past the three furlongs, with Lineage moving up. Lady Pam was beaten at the turn, where Cimabue and Toxeuma had closed up. Cimabue sot up to Paganelli a furlong from home and Toxemua put in a great run. A stirring finish saw Cimabue stave off Toxemua by half a head, with Paganelli a head away third. Lineage was right up fourth and Ceremony and Lady Pam were some lengths back. The time (1.12 2-5) was a race record. Cimabue was the obvious winner at the turn and he finished brilliantly. Telegraph Handicap. Benzora was a good favourite for the Telegraph Handicap. Royal Duke began best, but Ridgemount led round to the turn from Equitant, Royal Duke, Malayan and Richfield. Royal Duke ran to the lead at the turn and Richfield tackled him over the last bit to win by a length. Dobbin was half a length away, with Benzora fourth and Ridgemount and Melissa noxt. TE AROHA NOTES. FROM TRACK AND STABLE. (Special to Times.) TE AROHA, Thursday. Archeen for Whangarei. Archeen is holding his condition really well, and is galloping in a very willing style in his track tasks. He is to be sent to the Whangarei meeting, and will then 'be taken over by his new owners, who effected the purchase at a moderate price and should soon receive a return for the outlay. The Lamb Improving. The racing given The Lamb at Paeroa has effected a decided improvement in his condition. Superfluous weight has been reduced, and the Lord Multi lid gelding is executing his' work in good style. Sir Russell Building Up. Although not robust in constitution Sir Bussell is now thickening out in fi manner appreciated by his lesseetrainer, and the Archiestown gelding is looking better than at any time previously this season. His next engagement will be at the Waikato meeting, where, on the roomy Te Rapa course, he may be expected to run prominently. Taumai Recovering. Taumai is recovering slowly from the effects of the fall he sustained at Paeroa, but will not resume work on the tracks again for some time. Glenison’s Mishap. Glenison did not appear to stay on well over five furlongs in the Trial Plate at Taurariga. On this occasion, however, there is an excuse, for during the running tile filly twisted two of her racing plates, and was consequently hampered when putting 'in her final run. A Win for White Ringlet. Trainer Rhodes Wallace had White Ringlet at Tauranga, hut a bruised foot prevented her from being started. However, on Wednesday she w : on the Domain Handicap at Opotiki, so the trip was not in vain. (.Continued, i* column.)
Grand Arch Spelling. During the absence of M. Lipsey at O'potiki with Taurimu, Mr G. McShaffrey’s Grand Arch is at his owner’s property, Waihou. The Marble Ar-c-h representative has been running without luck lately, but he is such a line jumper that he should score a •win before long. R. B. Hines’ Two-year-olds. Mr R. B. Hines intends to winter King Win, who during his spell has thickened ouL a lot. As Baliour and Art Gallery are running out in the paddock the Mountain View owner will not have .any horses in work until the spring. Balfour lias been affected by so-me internal trouble, while the Lucullus filly injured her hocks last week by coming in contact with a fence. Town Bird’s Win. The schooling of Town Bird ovei hurdles seems to have had the effect of improving his staying ability. In the Greerton Handicap, of sev.n furlongs, at Tauranga, the black gelding was made far too much use of iu the early stages, but capably ridden by Chandler in the six furlongs Flying Handicap he ran a nice winning race. Now that he has struck form more wins may be registered by tbe Archiestown gelding. The nominations of Town Bird for Te Rapa were overlooked. Better Prospects. Volimond is now better than at any time previously this season, and shows every indication of being able to run out a full seven furlongs. The Limond mare failed badly at Te Rapa last November, but is practically certain to run in much improved style there next month. Antique Coming Back. After running a fair race in the Ohinemuri Cup Antique has been shaping well, and his track work indicates that he may soon he in the money again. His work lately has been of the half-pace and sprinting order, but be is thriving on it, Valstreet llmpressing. Some joining G. Reid’s stable Valstreet has been doing satisfactory work, and it is hoped that his harrier waywardness will soon be altered. The Valkyrian gelding is settling down nicely, and there is no reason why he should not be a payable proposition. Track Work. The track work this morning was done on the course proper. Sir Russell was sent two rounds at an easy gait-. Gold Day slipped over four iu Hongs ;n no i-ss, and Volimond ran three in 395. Honiton executed a satisfactory six furlongs, and Antique ran half a mile in 50s. Lucky Alice, who has built up materially of late was galloped half-pace work over six furlongs. Glenstar went two miles and Archeen skipped over four furlongs in 51s with ease. Valstreet cantered six furlongs and brushed home two in taking style. Ah Wera put in a solid three-quarter pace round, moving very freely. GOLDFINCH’S RECOVERY. H. Goldfinch, who was severely injured in a fall from Arikitoa when five horses fell in the Piako Hack Handicap at To Aroha last month, was sufficiently recovered io lie removed from hospital to his home in Auckland on Wednesday. It will probably be some time yet before the popular horseman is able to get about, and he is still confined to bed. TWO HORSES SOLD. AUCKLAND, Friday. The sale of two horses was effected at Ellerslie yesterday, when Hyde Park and the two-year-old Our Comet (by Day Comet —Lady Hill) were purchased by A. Rhodes, well known as the trainer of Glendowie when that horse was at the height of his fame about two years ago. Hyde Park was acquired for 650 guineas, but the amount involved in the purchase of Our Comet has not yet been disclosed. Unless there is some hitch in the shipping arrangements, Rhodes will leave for Sydney with his purchases by the Maunganui today and he may i eventually lake them to Melbourne. 1 I The Auckland trainer W. Garrett leaves to-day on, a holiday trip to England. It is intention to SDcnd
