Hundreds of thousands of boys and girls mostly of the Hindu caste, many bein£ still in their cradles have been married throughout India in the last few days in order to evade the provisions of the Indian Child Marriage Act which comes into operation on Tuesday next. The act raises the marriage age to 14 and the age of consent to 16. Most of the brides and bridegrooms are between nine and twelve years, but instances have been reported from the Bombay district where girls a few days old have been married, in some -ases to men 80 years 'their seniors.
