Question of Selectors. The question of selectors was discussed and it was decided to have a sole selector for each grade to be appointed by Lhe management committee. Messrs F. Quin and 11. Haselden were appoinled delegates to the Waikato Rugby Union. It was decided to open the season on. Saturday, April 26, with the ordinary club competitions. This day’s gate is lo ho given to the Insurance Fund. The question of whether to support, the playing of New Zealand rules for kicking into touch or the International rules was discussed, lt was left in the hands of the delegates. It was decided to emphatically protest against the New' Zealand Rugby Union’s attitude in refusing to broadcast the test matches against the visiting English team. The delegates were instructed to urge upon the Waikato Rugby Union the necessity of making some provision for paying insurance to players who were hurt when representing Waikato. The management committee was requested to consider the question of boundaries for the future during the present season. The Annual Report. The annual report stated : The 1929 team will long be remembered for the low standard of football in the union’s territory. Seven senior teams, five junior, and three third grade teams competed in the grade and championship games. The representatives in j various grades played twelve games | and won six, lost five, drew two, the I points scored being 117 for and 137 against. Towards the close of last season, a committee consisting of Messrs F. Quin, H. Brown, G. Jeffs ancl Lhe secretary were appointed by the management committee to formulate a scheme to bring down a report, with a view to improving the general standard of play. This committee, after giving the matter careful thought and consideration, reported to the management committee. This report, with the necessary alterations to the union’s rules, was passed before a special general meeting of Hie union and adopted. This means that the 1930 season will see inaugurated an entirely new scheme. It behoves all players to loyally support their club selectors in their decisions regarding the status of players.
Finlay Cup : At the commencement of last season the Waikato Rugby Union altered the rules governing this trophy. Up to the 1929 season, the challenges for the cup were played in the order of receipt, but at the annual meeting of the parent body this was altered to make provision for the challenges fieing drawn for. Waipa drew the last match. Against the holders, Cambridge, Waipa, after leading 6—3 right up to the call of time, were unlucky to he penalised on their goal line, when the holders equalised the score, thus retaining the coveted trophy. Grade winners: The senior grade' was won by Rovers, who also won the Ballistite Cup competition. The junior grade was won by United, Te Awamutu winning the third grade competition. Waikato Representatives : The following Waipa players were included in various Waikato fixtures : E. Holmes, L. Kay, P. Quin, A. Ward and W. Pollard. Visit From Eden Club. During the season a visit to Tc Awamutu was made by the Eden Club, Auckland, to play Waipa Junior Reps. The local players, though considerably lighter than their opponents, defeated them by 13—11. Peace Cup : A challenge was lodged for the Peace Cup, but owing lo the lateness in the season of Waipa’s fixture, the challenge was withdrawn. Finance: The finances of the Union are in a satisfactory condition. Starting with a credit of £39 18s lOd, the season was finished with a credit balance of £4O lOd 7d, of which £46 16s 5d is interest earning in the Post Onice Savings Bank. Insurance Fund: This account is unfortunately very low, starting with a credit of £3O 13s 9d and receiving in premiums and a special gate £55 9s Gd, making a total of £B6 3s 3d. Unfortunately the year was distinguished by the number of serious accidents and £BO was paid out in benefits, leaving a credit of £6 3s 3d in the fund. This matter will have to be carefully gone into by the incoming Management Committee. In concluding, the retiring Management Committee wishes to place on record its keen appreciation of the help and support of all who helped in any way to -make the 1929 season the success il undoubtedly was.
