TE AROHA BOROUGH.
MEETING OF COUNCIL. POSITION OF THE QUARRY. THE QUEEN CARNIVAL. Gr. Hedge, Deputy-Mayor, presided at ihe monthly meeting of the Tc Aroha Borough Council, Grs. Hamilton, Frith, McMahon, Cotter, Kennedy, W. E. Smith, 11. Pcaso also being present. The local secretary of the Obstetrical Endowment Appeal applied for a donation towards the fund. —It was resolved to contribute £5. The application of the Athletic and Cycling Club for the use of Merries’ Memorial Park on Easter Monday was granted. The Bank of New Zealand notified that the overdraft had been increased by one-half per cent. Messrs Carroll and Somers applied for the council’s approval of Mr J. M. Bell’s subdivision at Herricsville, and this was granted. It, was decided to transfer £IOOO from the water account to the general account. Rates Written Off. Unclaimable rates to the amount of £ll7 4s lid were written, off for the past seven years. The resignation of Miss Sharpe as lypistc and book-keeper was accepted, and Miss Muriel Darvall, of Te Kuiti, was appointed to the position. A letter was read from the Lands and Survey Department asking for a reply relative to the formation of Norrell Street.. The credit balance at the Bank was reported at £4040, and accounts totalling £2077 5s Id were passed for payment. Reports. The quarry foreman's report stated that from February 21 to March 21 460 yards of metal had been crushed at a quarry cost of 4s 7d per yard. (The abattoirs manager reported that during the month 106 cattle, 5 calves, 242 sheep, 28 lambs and 30 pigs had been slaughtered, the fees received totalling £BS 8s 6d. Tho secretary of the Municipal Band forwarded a balance-sheet for 11 months’ operations, showing receipts £l6l 12s 9d and expenditure £1.15 14s 9d, the credit balance being £45 18s. Tho treasurer of the hoard considered a credit of £BO would be shown at the end of the financial year. The Quarry Working. Regarding the borough quarry, Cr. Cotter said he was not satisfied that the best was being made out of this asset in the interests of the ratepayers. They were informed that as stripping was now requisite more men were required. He considered when orders were slack was tho time to put the quarry in order and attend to the stripping. The quarry foreman said that the Arapuni order was filled, and ho required assistance in the direction indicated in readiness for further large orders. Cr. Kennedy said if they were going to commercialise the quarry a larger plant would be required. He understood that during the last 12 months the quarry had shown a reasonable profit. , Cr. McMahon wished to know that as the output was small, and orders few, why the present staff could not do the stripping. Or. Frith contended there was plenty of work at the quarry for the -four men employed. The report was adopted. Queen Carnival Deputation. Messrs F. W. Walters, W. T. Dale, W. A. Clark and G. A. Bush attended as a deputation from the Thames Valley Agricultural, Pastoral and Horticultural Association in the matter of a joint effort with the council for tho carrying out of a Queen Carnival and the Jubilee celebrations. Mr Bush staled the wish of the association to work in with the council. The amount required to pay off the buildings at the Showground and erect salcyards was £BOO, and with the co-operation of Lire town this object should lie attained. Mr W. A. Clark stated that the cooperation of the town anti country was requisite. The object would probably lie defeated if it was decided to cacli make a single effort. The association considered 25 per cent, of the net profit should go to the Borough Council anil 75 per cent, to the Agricultural, Pastoral and Horticultural Association, hut lie thought that up to £BOO the division should he 25 and 75 per cent., and above that it be 50-50. lie considered greater success would he achieved if two Queens were selected for Te Aroha, by the Sports Committee and business people respectively. Cr. Cotter spoke eulogistically on the decision that town and country should co-operate in Te Aroha’s Jubilee Year, and other councillors spoke in the same strain. The Deputy-Mayor stated that the council committee’s recommendation was that the 'basis of profits he 3i i-3 and 66 2-3. It was arranged that the matter of percentage would he considered at the next meeting of the association. Proposed Town Hall. It was resolved that a letter received from the Loans Board he referred hack to the Town Hall Committee of the council.
