EMPIRE SUGAR.
PREFERENCE DUTIES. REQUEST FOR CONTINUANCE. DEPUTATION TO MR. SNOWDEN. United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel.—Copyright. (Received March 27, 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, March 26. A deputation representing the Empire’s sugar industry urged x on Right Hon. Philip Snowden the importance of maintaining preferences. ° Hon. L. C. M. S. Amery (Secretary for the Dominions in the Baldwin Cabinet), in introducing the deputation, said the withdrawal of preference would virtually intinguish colonial production and almost cause a disaster in the Dominions. Queensland’s development would be brought to a standstill. Mr. Snowden replied that the Government’s viewpoint had been made clear. It would maintain preference while the duty remained, but it was not prepared to continue the duty in order to give preference. Mr. Snowden added that he appreciated the industry’s serious position hut he was not prepared to anticipate the Budget or make promises regarding it.
