CAMBRIDGE BUSINESSMEN.

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. THE QUARTERLY MEETING. At the quarterly meeting of the Cambridge Chamber of Commerce the President (Mr T. F. Richards), occupied the chair, and there was a good attendance of members. In reply to the chamber’s request that the streets 'through the main part of the town should be swept more often and on Sunday mornings, if possible, the Town Clerk wrote on behalf of the Borough Council that it was considered 'that the present systom adopted was adequate to keep tlie streets in good condition. The letter was received. Provincial Tour. The local slationmaster, Mr S. D. Munn, submitted a proposal from 'the Railway Department, which stated that if sufficient support was forthcoming a farmers’ excursion would be run from the Auckland Province to the South Island, leaving Auckland on Tuesday, May 13, and returning to Auckland on Sunday, May 25. Mr Munn said that the Department would like some indication as to what support would he forthcoming. Members of the Chamber were unanimously of the opinion that the inter-change of visits, - which was becoming very popular, had far-reaching benefitsThe chairman thought the matter was really for the Farmers’ Union to deal with, but that the organised excursions were a splendid means of seeing what is done in other parts of the Dominion on economical lines. It was decided that the Chamber would give the proposal its moral support. Main Street Plots. Some discussion took place in regard to a suggestion brought forward by Mr F. 'Kingsford, that garden plots might be made down the centre of Victoria - Street. iMr Kingsford contended that besides beautifying the town the plots would act as safety zones for pedestrians, and be a traffic regulator. Mr S. R. James, while agreeing that the scheme would greatly beautify the street, was afraid-that the matter of financing it would prove a difficulty. It would mean more rates to property-owners who were already contributing toward the Domain. No action was taken in this matter. The Crown in Business. A very able and interesting paper entitled “The Crown in Business,” written by Mr Ziman, of Auckland, was read by Mr E. B. Kemsley. The writer, while indicating his staunch loyalty, gave many instances where the Crown enjoyed privileges which were denied the private trader. He also emphasised the almost unfair contest of a private individual suing the Crown in a Court of law. Whilst tlie actual proceedings were beyond question, the Crown was given such protection that i ; t was hard for a private individual to win a case against it. A vote of thanks was accorded IMr Kemsley- for reading the paper.
