RACING.
FROM TRACK AND STABLE. NOTES AND COMMENTS. (By “Martian.”) The Autumn meeting of the Waikato Racing Club, ■which will be held at the club’s 'course at Te Rapa on Saturday, April 12 and Monday, April 14, gives ‘indication of .being very successful. The acceptances for the meeting will close at 5 p.m. on Friday, April 4, with the secretary (Mr E. 11. O’Meara), at Hamilton, or with Messrs Blomfleld and Co., Auckland. When Stormy, who was formerly owned by Mr 11. W. Burch, of Hamilton, won the principal handicap on a soft track at Moorefleld ('Mew South Wales) on March 15, the Quin Abbey started favourite and beat Magduff by a neck. Omeo, who led the field home in the hurdle race at the Manawatu meeting yesterday, will be remembered in this district as having been successful in the batten race at the annual meeting of the Waikato Hunt at Cambridge last Labour Day. The Quartine — Munilioness gelding has proved a useful stake earner this season. The five-year-old Absurd —Cherry Mart gelding Southern Cross, who raced in this country as Covent Garden, continues to hold his place in (he front rank of (he Sydney ponies- At Victoria Park on March 19 he won the first division of the Victoria Park Handicap, 'carrying 9.5, by two lengths in Imin 50'jscc. He ’started fourth favourite at a good price. The Swell, who won the Prince of Wales Handicap at the Manawatu meeting yesterday, has been doing most of his racing this season in the open handicap class at a middle distance. 'His form had been the reverse of successful and it was no surprise !o find that his victory yesterday was attended by a wide return. The Swell, who is an aged gelding by Rangitero from Tangimoana is owned by the Taranaki trainer, R. Johnson. Gesture’s success in the Stakes at Awapuni yesterday gave further support to her claim as the outstanding two-year-old of the season. It w T as unfortunate that 'Cylinder, the conqueror of Paganelli at Trentham, should lose his rider during the running of yesterday’s race. Australia has an interest in Gesture, becaus.e her dam, Nottava, with a filly foal at foot, and served again by Ghief Ruler, was purchased for 200 guineas last year, by Mr G. N. Magill, and is now at Molong. The filly, now a yearling, has been broken in by J. King, and, if she comes up to Gesture’s standard as a racehorse, Mr Magill will be well repaid for his outlay. Nottava now has another filly foal, and next season -Mr Magill intends to send her across to Chief Ruler. In this brood-mare he has made a much better bargain than with the disappointing- Valais mare Bouveret, who cost 2400 guineas as a yearling, and, although now a five-year-old, has not won a race. Bouveret has now been definitely retired, having been sent to Molong last week. NOTES FROM MATAMATA. WELCOME BOY’S DOUBLE. (Special to the Times). MATAMATA, Thursday. H. Mateer had. Welcome Boy looking very fit for his Tauranga engagements and was rewarded by scoring a double. Mr G. A. Earl, who owns Welcome Boy, is a resident of Tauranga and the double success of his horse was very popular. This horse had previously run several good races this season without actually winning. He should he a payable proposition next season. Welcome Boy is to have a couple of months spell before being again raced. Lapaway’s Future. Lapaway, by Lapidary-—Queenle South, ran two good races at the recent Paeroa meeting without getting into the money. This Ally has shown a lot of pa-ce on the track, but is on the small side and is at a disadvantage in a big field. Better ridden on the second day at Paeroa, however, she would have been close to the winner. R. Mateer has her looking very well and she is a likely one at any time. Reorult to Steepleohaslng. Spalupin, who has been under the care of IL Martin for the past month, gave a dashing display of jumping in the McGuire Steeplechase at Paeroa, while his condition lasted. He is a recruit from the show ring and should only require to be turned out in good racing trim to win a stake for his joint owners, Messrs F. Martin and F. Hill. Valreina In Work Again. Valreina, from R. Martin’s stable, is again in work and will he racing at 1 lie coming Waikato meeting. After her Matamala success she was Healed to a short spell. This daughter of Vaikyrian—lrene Bruce is proving a diillcult mare to train and it may lie some time before she shows her best. May Be Spelled. The Jack Jumper, who had been working well on the track, was expected to land a stake at Tauranga. but he failed to run on. This horse is proving expensive to his connections and will more than likely be treated lo a long spell. THE AUCKLAND CLUB. AUTUMN MEETING APRIL 19 & 21. GENERAL ENTRIES AND FORFEITS.
