BEEF UNIMPROVED. STEADY COMPETITION FOR SHEEP At the Westfield fat stock sale yesterday beef cattle were yarded In less than average numbers, hut the demand did not Improve and the prices realised were on a par with those of last week. Sheep came forward in usual numbers and met with steady competition, prices showing little alteration. Lambs also maintained late rates. An average . yarding of fat pigs realised prices equal to those of last week, except for an easing tendency in the lighter porkers. Loan and Mercantile. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Go., Ltd., report:—• At the Westfield market yesterday 1(601 was penned in fewer than average numbers. There W’as little or no alteration in the demand, with values on a par -with last week’s sale. Extra choice ox sold to £1 17s per 1001 b; choice and prime, £1 14s to £1 16s; ordinary and plain, £1 11s to £1 13s; prime young cow and heifer beef, £i 10s to £1 13s; ordinary cow beef, £1 5s to £1 9s; heavy prime steers ■made £l3 to £l4;' lighter prime, £ll 12s 6d to £l2 15s; light prime, £lO to £ll 10s; unfinished and small; £8 10s to £9 15s; extra heavy prime young cows and heifers, £9 10s to £lO 10s; heavy prime young cows and heifers, £8 5s to £9 7s 6d; lighter, £6 15s to £8; light cows, £5 15s to £6 12s 6d; other cows, £4 10s to £5 10s. Sheep were yarded in average numbers. There was a steady demand, with values firm at late quotations. Extra heavy prime wethers made £1 •9s Gd to £1 10s; heavy prime, £1 8s 6d to £1 9s 3d; medium prime, £1 7s to £1 8s 3d; light prime, £1 5s 6d to £1 6s 9d; small and unfinished, £1 3s to £1 5s 3d; extra heavy prime ewes, £1 2s to £1 3s 9d; heavy prime, 19s 9d to £1 Is Gd; medium prime, 18s to 19s 6d; light prime, 15s to 17s 9d; inferiorly fatted ewes, 7s 6d to 14s, 9d. Lambs were penned in average numbers, and sold at late rates, prime quality selling at from 19s to £1 3s 9d; and unfinished 7s 6d to 16s 6d. Pigs were penned in average numbers. Values w r ere firm except for porkers, values for which were slightly easier on late quotations. Choppers sold from £2 10s to £4 14s; heavy and medium baconers, £4 8s to £5; light baconers and heavy porkers, £3 16s to £4 6s; medium and light porkers £3 to £3 14s; small and unfinished porkers, £2 6s to £2 14s. There was an average yarding of store pigs, for which values were easier. Large stores made £1 10s to £1 16s; slips, £1 to £1 8s; weaners, 5s to 16s. Calves w’ere penned in small numbers. Values firmed on last week's quotations. No runners were penned. Heavy vealers made £4 to £5 4s; medium, £3 6s to £3 16s; light, £2 13s to £3 3s; smaller, £2 to £2 12s; small and fresh dropped, 7s to £1 18s; rough calves, 15s to £1 10s. Dalgety and Company. At the weekly Westfield fat stock sale of Dalgety and Co., Ltd., at Auckland lb-day, ox beef w r as offered in less numbers than usual, and sold at last week’s values. Cow' and heifer beef, for which competition was steady, v'as yarded in average numbers, values being on a par with last week’s rates. Extra choice ox sold at 37s per 1001 b; choice and prime ox, 34s to 365; secondary and plain ox, 32s to 345; prime young cow' and heifer beef 335; ordinary cow' beef, 29s to 31s. Extra heavy prime young cows and heifers made £10; heavy prime cows and heifers, £8 2s 6d to £9 10s; lighter prime cow's and heifers, £6 to £7 15s; other tillable cow's, £5 17s Gd. Sheep w’ere yarded in average numbers, the quality being first-class. Competition was slack and last week’s values w’ere barely maintained. Extra prime mixed sex two-tooths realised 28s; extra prime four-tooth wethers from the Waikato, 28s to 295; ordinary l'at ewes, 15s 3d to 16s 6d. Extra heavy prime'wethers made 295; heavy prime, 27s 6d to 28s 6d; medium, 26s ,0d; light and unfinished, 24s to 25s 3d; lighter ev’es, 15s 3d to 16s 6d; other ewes, 10s to 14s. Lambs w’ere yarded in average numbers and competition was slack, with values even easier than the preceding wmek. Heavy prime lambs realised 23s 6d; medium, 21s Gd; light, 18s 6d to 20s. Calves penned in smaller numbers and sold under better competition than last week, particularly good quality light vealers. Heavy vealers made £4 to £4 15s; medium, £3 8s to £3 18s; light, £2 5s to £3 ss; rough, £1 to £1 15s; small, 15s to £1 10s. Pigs sold under steady bidding at about late rates, with an easing tendency for light classes. Heavy baconers made £4 12s to £4 17s; heavy porkers, £3 to £3 Gs; medium baconers, £4 to £4 10s; medium porkers, £2 :14s to £2 ISs; light baconers, £3 Ss to £3 18s; light porkers, £2 7s to £2 12s. Alfred Buckland and Sons. Messrs A. Buckland and Son, report that to-day at Westfield their beef supply totalled 26 J head, comprising 141 steers and 120 cows and heifers, compared with 433 head last Wednesday. There was no improvement in the demand, and values realised were on a par with those of last week. Extra choice ox sold to 37s per 1001 b; choice and prime, 34s to 375; secondary and plain, 32s to 335; prime young cow and heifer beef, 30s to 335; secondary, 24s to 295. Heavy prime steers ranged in price from £l4 to £ls; lighter £l2 15s to £l3 17s 6d; light, £ll 10s to £l2 12s 6d; unfinished and small, £8 7s Gd to £ll 17s Gd; heavy prime young cows and heifers, £9 15s to £11; lighter, £7 10s to £9 12s Gd; other cows, £4 10s to £6 17s 6d. The sheep pens v ; ere moderately filled with a nice class of mutton. There was steady demand, with values ;

Extra heavy prime wethers made £1 8s 9d to £1 10s; heavy prime wethers, £1 7s to £1 8s 6d; medium to heavy prime wethers, £1 6s 6d to £1 7s 3d; light to medium prime wethers, £1 5s 6d to £1 6s 3d; unfinished wethers, £1 3s to £1 5s 3d; extra heavy prime young ewes, £1 Is to £1 2s Od; heavy prime ewes, 18s 6d to £1 Os 6d; lighter prime ewes, 17s to ISs 3d; other tillable ewes, 15s to 16s 9d; other ewes, 12s to 14s 9d. Lambs were penned to the number of 298 and sold steadily throughout at ruling values. Extra heavy prime lambs brought £1 3s 9d to £1 4s 9d; heavy prime lambs, £1 2s 6d to £1 3s 6d; lighter prime lambs, £1 Is to £1 2s 3d; light prime lambs, 18s to £1 Os 9d; small and plain lambs, 14s to 17s 6d. We had a smaller entry of fat and young calves. The demand was firmer and our quotations show a slight improvement, especially for light-weight vealers. Runners made £4 10s to £8 17s 6d; heavy vealers, £3 15s to £4 10s; medium, £3 3s to £3 8s; light, £2 10s to £3; small, £1 18s to £2 6s; bucket-fed calves, £1 6s to £1 13s; rough and unfinished, £1 to £1 3s; small, 5s to 17s. An average yarding of fat pigs was offered. Prime baconers realised late rates, but values for porkers were inclined to ease. Baconers sold at equal to 6|d to 7£d per lb. and porkers 7d to 7}d per lb. Choppers made £3 3s to £4 (no heavy choppers were penned); heavy baconers, £4 12s to £4 15s (no extra heavy were offered) ; medium baconers, £4 3s to £4 7s; light, £3 13s to £3 18s; heavy porkers, £3 4s to £3 8s; medium, £2 12s to £2 19s; light, £2 5s to £2 10s; small and unfinished, £1 13s to £2; good stores, £2 to £2 6s; best slips, £1 8s to £1 Us; weaners, 14s to 18s; small suckers, 8s to 11s.
