LAND DEFENCE.
REVISION PROCEEDING. GAMPS TO BE CANCELLED. WELLINGTON, Wednesday. The Prime Minister, who is at Rotorua, has issued the following statement : “ The Government is engaged in careful consideration of the system of land defence in New Zealand and a revision of the whole question is proceeding, especially having regard to the necessity of reducing the annual expenditure on this branch of defence. It is the intention of the Government to submit, proposals in this respect to Parliament next session and in the meantime it has been decided that upon the termination of the territorial camps at present being held no further camps will lake place until Parliament lias had an opportunity of considering the Government’s proposals.” it is understood that the Government’s decision, which appears to he an economy measure, involves the cancellation of eight camps. These comprise three mounted camps in the Southern command, three mounted and one medical camp in tho Central command, and one battery camp in the Northern command.
