.A few minutes before the Wahine sailed from Wellington for Lyttelton the other night an intending passenger walked too near the edge of the wharf tripped, and fell into the water. Sergeant Duke, of the Wharf Police, who was standing nearby, promptly climbed down one of the cross stringers and caught the man just as he rose to the surface. Sergeant Duke helped him up on to the wharf, and he lost no time in boarding the vessel.
