Mr. -Charles Mitchell, chairman of the National City Bank, and Dr. Hugo Eckencr. designer and commander of the Graf Zeppelin, announce llie formation of a company by prominent financial and aircraft interests in Hie United States and Europe for the establishment of a lighter than air mail and passenger trans-Atlantic line. Preparations for the organisation of a service are to be made ill is year. The capital of the. new concern totals several million dollars. Actively interested arc such companies as United Aircraft, National Air Transport Corporation and the Union Carbide Company.
Of parlicular interest is the participation of United Aircraft, hitherto identified only with aeroplanes and accessories. Its subsidiary lines extend from Canada lo Mexico, from San Francisco to Cleveland.
In an interview 7 to-day Hr. Eckencr said the scheme was of particular importance lo him because it meant that aeroplanes and airships, long regarded as competitors, are to he joined in a co-operative enterprise. Already airships had achieved what might lie called moral successes over longperiods of time. Those were necessary and gave them the necessary assurance and courage lo proceed. Now they had gone beyond moral achievement into 1 lie Held of actual accomplishment. They were ready to go ahead and complete their studies of the practical problems to be solved before launching the project.
The company had been formed and the capital had been fully subscribed. By the end of the year they would have completed their studies.
