WOMEN DRINKERS.

THE HABIT GROWING. A LOVE OP COCKTAILS. AUCKLAND, Wednesday. Allegations that the habit of drinking intoxicating liquor was spreading among young women were made by Mrs I. Phillips, a delegate from the Albany Women’s Institute, at the biannual meeting of the Auckland Provincial Federation of Women’s Institutes yesterday. /

“ I have seen young girls in a state of intoxication on the beaches after the cabarets have closed, and even in 'broad daylight on the racecourses,” declared Mrs Phillips. “ The drink habit crept in during the war period, when women were living under-a constant strain. Instead of dying out the habit has grown to alarming proportions, and it is now in grave danger of sapping the very foundations of our country. Dances, socials, and bridge parties are now considered ‘tame affairs ’ unless cocktails are provided. A remit to the effect that women and girls should be prohibited from drinking intoxicating liquor in public places was carried.
