V. O’NEILL ARRIVES.
WELL-KNOWN TRAINER. SUCCESSES IN AUSTRALIA. Mr Vincent O'Neill, a New Zealander who has made a name for himself as a trainer in Australia; arrived by the Maunganui yesterday on a holiday visit to the Dominion, after an absence of 17 years. Thirty years ago Mr O’Neill was a leading light-w-eight jockey in New Zealand. Spearfelt’s victory in the Melbourne Cup in 1926 was Mr O'Neill’s greatest triumph, for he trained the horse, and also owned a part share, which he sold at a handsome figure only a few days before the event. Altogether horses trained by him have won stakes to the value of £IOO,OOO. no fewer than 300 winners having passed through his hands. Mr O’Neill, who is accompanied by Mr 11. L. Spry, of Melbourne, will spend a fortnight in New Zealand, lie will leave Auckland this evening for Hastings, where lie was born. Later lie will go on to Christchurch, and will return to Auckland on his way hack to Australia. H. DULIEU ILL. AUCKLAND, Wednesday. Owing to illness 11. Dulieu will be unable to fulfil his riding engagements at the Manawatu meeting at Awapuni to-day and to-morrow. lie expects to be about agaih in a few days. BAY OF PLENTY MEETING. TAXATION, £1336. The total taxation payable in connection with tlie Bay of Plenty Jockey Club’s race meeting held on Saturday was £1336 2s 3d, made up as follows :—Totalisator tax, £451 18s 9d; dividend lax, £Bl3 ss: amusement tax, £2-4 3s Gd; stakes tax, £4O 15s. AUSTRALIAN RACING. N.Z. HORSES ENTERED. WELLINGTON, Tuesday. General entries for the Australian Jockey Club’s Easter meeting at Randwick made with the secretary of the Wellington Racing Club yesterday, were :—-Concentrate, Cimalnie, Gesture, Royal Duke, Goshawk, Merry Mint and Habit.
The first four will comprise 11. B. Lorigan’s team, and they will leave lor Sydney by next week’s steamer. With regard to J. M. Cameron’s pair, Goshawk and Merry Mint, there has been some doubt-, hut as entries have been made for them at this stage, it would suggest that they are probable travellers. Habit's departure next week for Sydney had already been announced.
