FEDERAL VICE-REGENT.

NAMES MENTIONED. LOCAL APPOINTMENT SUGGESTED. CURRENT RUMOURS. United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. —Copyright. (Received March 25, 11.50 a-m.) SYDNEY, March 25. Rumours are current that Sir Adrian Knox, Chief Justice of the High Court, is a possibility as the next GovernorGeneral of Australia. Oiher names mentioned are General Sir 11. G. Chauvel, General Sir John Monash, also Air 'Charlton, a former Federal Labour Party Leader, and Sir •E. Groom, late Speaker of the House of Representatives. Labour members are pressing for the appointment of an Australian, and Sir Adrian Knox’s acceptance, involving as it would, his resignation from the Bench, would be particularly pleasing to a section of the Labour Party. Official circles at Canberra maintain the strictest secrecy on the matter. A message from London states that the Dominions Office regards the rumour as ridiculous. No name has yet been submitted to the King, nor is it likely to be for some time. Mr C. E. Fenton, Federal Minister of Trade and Customs, who is here as a delegate to the Naval Conference, is of opinion that the time is not ripe for a local appointment, which would be sure to cause heart-burnings.
