SWIMMING SPORTS. . iEMTER-HOUSE CUP. ~v' WON BY AKE ARE HOUSE. Ideal swimming conditions prevailed when the Hillcrest School held its annual swimming sports at the school baths. The arrangements were in the hands of Ml- E. E. Hale, chairman of the School Committee, and the headmaster (Mr Campbell Boyle). Mcsdames Short and Shaw acted as judges, while Messrs Anderson and Oillis judged the diving events. A programme of some GO events was put Hi rough in three and a half hours. The Akc Ake House was successful for the third consecutive year in winning thje inter-house Cup. the points gained being: Akc Akc 111, Aorangi ~0, Rnngitira 41. At the conclusion of the programme the iadies of the committee, under Mbs E. E. Hale, dispensed an excellent afternoon tea. Mr Hale, in presenting the Intcrhouse Cup to Hie captains of the Ake Ake House (Miss Noeline Short, and Master Bob Davidson), stressed the valuable asset which the school had in its baths. lie desired to acknowledge tlie school's indebtedness to Mcsdames Boss and English and their assistants for tlic tuition given during Hamilton's Learn-to-Swim Week, and to the school staff for their efforts in furthering the good work. Last season tile number of certificates obtained equalled 5G per cent, of the roil of the standard classes. It was the aim of the school to make of every pupil a swimmer. Opportunity was also taken to present the following Maoriland attendance certificates for 1929 —Full attendance (400 half-days)': Douglas Shaw, Standard Y.; Bob Davison, Standard V.; Adele Shaw, Standard IV.; Fred Davies, Standard 111. Mr Hale said that, ho noted with pleasure that the number of children qualifying for certificates had risen from six io sixteen in one year. Master Ralph Buckenham was presented with Mr Short’s trophy to bo awarded to the first boy making 25 runs or over in the inter-schools cricket competition. Cheers for the chairman, committee and the lady helpers, lustily given at the call of the headmaster, brought a very pleasant function to a close.
