MEETING OF COUNCIL, | i I WORKS COMMITTEE’S REPORTS. ■The fortnightly meeling of the Te A warn utu Borough Council was held on Monday evening, when the Mayor (Mr C. G. Downes) was in the chair. The Works Committee reported: — Redoubt Street: The part of this street next to Sloane Street has been metalled and asphalted the full width of the street as far as Walton Street. All the footways which have been recently laid down with have been top-dressed. Walton Street: The proposed path along the 'back of the post office premises in this street has been kerbed 6ft wide, as directedThe path will now be cleared and sanded and made available for pedestrians. The lcerbing stops at the building line in Roche Street. When this street is asphalted the crossing-in Roche Street will have to be lifted; in the meantime, it is handy as a crossing. An application for the water supply connection to Mr Heslop's abattoir was granted on the usual connections. Some discussion toolc place regarding the water connection, the Mayor pointing out that it was really a public health matter. As regards other connections, they were in a different position. The report was adopted. A special meeting of the council wilß be held on Monday, March 31, to deal with the saleyards and water supply, town hall, and other matters of the closing financial year. The secretary of the Te Awamutu Fire Board asked the council to make arrangements with their turncock, so that he would turn out when a firealarm rang, to turn all waters into the mains being used, if necessary. The town clerk pointed out this was already being done. Extension of Street.
The secretary of the 'Chamber of Commerce asked the if the time was not opportune to again consider the question of extending Mutu Street to the Great South Road, or at least to arrange for the bridging of Mangahoe Street, so that it could act as a stock routeIt- was also asked to consider the erection of street signs in the borough. The town clerk said there was bound up with this the question of another stock route from Park Road to Gorst Avenue. The Mayor said it might be as well to approach the church authorities, and have a road put through on the town side of the Mangahoe Stream. It was more a matter for the Works Committee. It was decided to ascertain _ the views of the Waipa County Council on this amended scheme. The cost of the street name plates is also to he put on the estimates for life coming year. .Mr A. Blank,' fisherman, Kawhia, said he had been advised that it was necessary for him to have some stand for him lo sell fish on. lie therefore applied for some stand, for which lie was prepared to pay a reasonable rental. This aroused considerable discussion. It was decided to decline the application. Fire Escapes. 1 The Fire Board advised that its superintendent considered the fire escapes at the Empire Theatre inadequate, this opinion being hacked up by Inspector Hugo on his recent visit. They asked for improvements to he effected as soon as possible. Cr. Spinley asked if it w>as known exactly what was wantedThe Mayor said that Inspector Hugo considered that the - escapes should he carried right down to Hie
ground. He also suggested that the public should be encouraged to use the fire escapes. A copy of this letter is to be sent to the Empire Theatre Company. The ,I’ukekolie Municipal Band advised' that through the re-arrangement of their trip, they would he in Te Awamutu on Grood Friday evening, and asked if the privilege of playing would be granted them on the altered date.— \ copy of this letter is to be sent to the local hand. The St. John’s 'Horticultural Society applied for permission to erect a sign across Roach Street on the occasion of, their autumn show.—Application granted. Cr. Butterworth asked for the use of the swimming baths during the Easter holidays for the members of the Presbyterian Bible class who will be camped there during the holidays. —Referred to the Swimming Club. The town clerk reported that the fees received at Sehvyn Park from motor campers amounted to £l2 12s 6d, a total of 101 visitors. The hisLoric -cherry tree in Sehvyn Park, which had part of it blown down, is to be cut down, as its prospects of surviving were very small. The Waipa Rugby Union is to be requested to meet the council to discuss the conditions to be observed at Albert Park during the coming season as regards the opening of the gates and dressing sheds on Saturday afternoons. , oin . Tbe town clerk reported that JIUi sheep had been put through the dip up to the present.
