MAIN STREET CROSSING.
Another attempt to induce the Railway Department to effect some improvements at the Victoria Street level crossing has proved futile. The Minister of Railways’ communication to the Borough Council on Wednesday evening indicates that the present most unsatisfactory state of affairs is to continue and the business of the town held up to suit the convenience of the Railway Department. The Council submitted a scheme to the Department involving a deviation of the line. It would admittedly have been a costly undertaking, and the Minister states it has been thoroughly investigated but he does not deem it necessary and cannot agree to putting it in hand. That is definite, hut he does not submit any alternative scheme with a x r iew to solving the problem which is now acute and daily becoming more so. Hamilton is not standing still; it continues to progress, and that progress means more traffic on our streets. Most of our northern and southern traffic passes along Victoria Street, which is to all intents and purposes our only avc-nue of ingress and egress, and the hold-up of business along our only traffic route whenever a train passes eastward or westward means loss of time and money. It is a heavy handicap to the trade of the town and it should, in fairness to the tradespeople particularly and citizens generally, be remedied. The Minister has rejected the proposition submitted by the Borough Council. It remains for hi-m and his department to formulate and adopt an alternative that will afford the town the needed relief.
