COUNCIL MEETING. The fortnightly meeting of the was held on Wednesday evening, the Mayor, Mr H. J. Sampson presiding. Also present were Crs. .Johnston, Paterson, Saulbrey, Watts, Eyre and the town clerk, Mr H. B. Fraser. Sale Yards. Regarding t-lie sale-yard report it was decided to adopt the suggestion of Or Paterson that a fee of 2s 6d per head for the inu'ying of any dead animals be charged. Foreign Bitumen. An article regarding the importation of Mexican hitumenous products and the use of them in preference to Now Zealand made products and the heavy loss against such fierce competition was read by the town clerk. The article pointed out the enormous increase of these importations in the last five years, the increase being from £4,880 to £70,000 for the year. Furthermore it was mentioned that Great Britain used comparatively little imported asphalt but favoured Britishmade tar from which preparation excellent road surfacing was maintained. The reading was followed by a discussion on the comparative use of tar and bitumen. Vi/ater Rates. It was resolved to discard watermeters and to strike a flat rate instead. Consumers outside the borough pay an annual rate of £5 if the supply is used for stock and for the house, £3 if stock only; £1 per annum for extraordinary ; consumers within the borough. Picture Posters. The matter of displaying picture posters over the week-end in front of the Town Hall was placed before the council. It was decided that the matter be left to the discretion of the lessee. Trees in Streets. Cr. Saulbrey drew the attention of the council to a court decision recently given against the Borough Council in Palmerston North for damages incurred by a motor-car coming into collision with a U'ee in the street. The council considered it a serious decision but no action was taken. Tennis. On Saturday the Taupiri and Ngaruawahia seniors will meet on the Ngaruawahia courts. The following will represent Ngaruawhia ; —,l. Menzies, H. J. Simpson, H. W. Sampson, F. Kibblewhite, Mesdames. lsdale, Kibblewhite, Miss Phar and Miss O’Connor.
